Cincinnati vs. Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky, January 15. THE University of Louisville men's and women's swimming and diving teams set four pool records and two school records en route to a sweep of BIG EAST rival Cincinnati Saturday evening at the Ralph Wright Natatorium. The men won 214-69 and the women won 211-83. The Cardinals squads are both 3-0 against conference foes.

"It was good to race again," said U of L head coach Arthur Albiero, whose team has not competed since the USA Short Course Championships the weekend of Dec. 3. "We responded well to the challenge of racing with the championship mindset. We are in a good place but we need to continue to step up our preparation in the weeks to come."

Pedro Oliveira (400-medley relay, 800-free relay, 200 fly and 200-back) and Raine Thompson (400-medley relay, 800-free relay, 200-fly and 500-free) each won four races apiece. Divers Hannah Gadd and Cameron Dehn each swept both the 1- and 3-meter boards. Fanny Lilliestrom got an NCAA cut in the 200-breast.

Other multiple event winners included Therese Bergstrom (400-medley relay, 100-breast), Aileen Cole (400-medley relay, 100-free), Matt Schlytter (50- and 100-free), Grite Apanaviciute (50- and 100-free, 800 free relay) and Fanny Lilliestrom (200-breast, 200-IM). Also Lindsey LaPorte (1650-free, 800 free relay), Alex Burtch (400-medley relay, 800 free relay) Breann McDowell (200-free, 800-free relay)

Cincinnati did not bring any men's divers, clearing the way for the Cardinals to sweep the top three spots. Cameron Dehn won the 3-meter with a score of 373.28 followed by senior David Zamkov (331.06) and Korey Schrock taking third with a score of 295.13. The women had plenty of competition but Hannah Gadd was able to set a school record with a total of 328.43. Lindsey Stephens was higher than the pool record by two points with a score of 298.35 for the top two places.
"We had record breaking performances today and dove really well," said diving coach Mike Zehnder. "After winter training and training for a long time just against each other, it was great to compete again. It was a good tuneup with Kentucky, Virginia Tech and Indiana on the horizon."

In the 400-medley relay, the foursome of Krissie Brandenburg, Therese Bergstrom, Raine Thompson with Aileen Cole anchoring to set a pool record of 3:45.37. The Cardinal B-relay of Eszter Povazsay, Giselle Kohoyda, Nicole Landisch and Grite Apanaviciute combined to post a time of 3:47.94, which was also faster than the standing pool record of 3:52.49 set by Pitt in November . The U of L's men's team of Nathan Kinney, Carlos Almeida, Pedro Oliveira and Alex Burtch put up a time of 3:23.44 and the B-relay took second place points when Juan Lopez, Kameron Chastain, Tim Collins and Michael Pryor combined for a time of 3:24.88.

In the grueling 1650, the top three Cardinal women established a lead 400 yards into the race and never looked back. Lindsey LaPorte took top honors with a time of 17.07.1, Carly Munchel was second in 17:09.61 and Melissa Steele cruised in at 17:31.89 for the sweep. The men were led by Riley Martin's first in 15:46.45 with Shane Lichtenberg touching second in 15:48.35 for the one-two sweep.

In the 200-freestyle, the Cardinals Breann McDowell and Eszter Povazsay touched first and second, respectively with Breann posting a time of 1:52.00 and Eszter going 1:53.36. The men's event was dominated by Joao De Lucca who won in 1:40.91 in his first collegiate swim.

Mary Mittel won the 100-back with a time of 57.44. Nathan Kinney won for the men's 100-back 52.96 with Tim Collins touching second in 53.18 for the sweep.

In the 100-breast, Therese Bergstrom led from wire-to wire with a time of 1:03.40, Fanny Lilliestrom was second in 1:03.71 and Aileen Cole touched third for the sweep in 1:05.67 for yet another sweep. In the men's race, Kameron Chastain won in 56:48 with Michael Haefner touching second in 58.06 and Ryan Cox was into the wall in 58.17.

Raine Thompson had her hands full in the 200-fly but held off the competition, touching first in 2:03.14 just ahead of Laurie Caudy (2:04.37) and then Cardinal Jackie Sherrard snuck in for third with a time of 2:06.41. Pedro Oliveira took top honors in the 200-fly with a time of 1:50.12 with teammate Juan Lopez touching second in 1:53.68. Riley Martin made it a top-three sweep with a third place (1:54.29).

Fanny Lilliestrom won the 200-IM with a time of 2:03.62. Carlos Almeida took top honors in the men's event with a time of 1:51.73.

In a hotly contested 50-free, Grite Apanaviciute (23.57) edged teammate Lacey Bobo (23.77) by two-tenths. Nicole Landisch was third in 24.04. Matt Schlytter won for the mne in 20.89 and Kenneth Crapse was second in 21.35 and Joao De Lucca (21.84) was in hot pursuit for another top three sweep.

In the 100-free, Grite Apanaviciute cruised to a win in 50.98 with Aileen Cole hitting second in 52.00. For the men, Matt Schlytter held off freshman Joao De Lucca to win in 46.38 with De Lucca on his heels with a time of 46.76. Nathan Kinney took third for the sweep with a time of 48.53.

Hannah Gadd set a school and pool record on the 3-meter board with a score of 330.22 for U of L. Teammate Lindsey Stephens was second, also breaking the team record of 300.65 with a score of 301.20. Cameron Dehn took the 1-meter for the men with a score of 314.99, followed by Korey Shrock (263.92) and David Zamkov finishing third with 215.77.

Eszter Povazsay cruised to an easy win the 200-back in 2:01.54, almost three seconds ahead of the field. Krissie Brandenburg was third with a time of 24.92 just being just edged by one-one hundredth of a second from UC's Liz Hansson. For the men, Pedro Oliveira was the best in the field with a time of 1:48.18, followed by freshman Juan Lopez (1:51.94).

In the 200-breast, Fanny Lilliestrom was first in 2:17.26 which was good for an NCAA B-cut for the Cardinals. Therese Bergstrom was second in 2:18.19. In the men's event, Kenneth Crapse was first in 2:04.73 with Ryan Cox cruising in second in 2:07.64.

In the 500-free, Raine Thompson built an large lead and then held on for the win out of lane seven with a time of 4:58.62. Shane Lichtenberg gutted out a win with a time of 4:33.49. Carlos Almeida had the second fastest time in 4:34.08.

Lacey Bobo took top honors in the 100-fly with a time of 57.03. The men's 100-fly was won by Tim Collins with a time of 50.11.

The foursome of Lindsey LaPorte, Breann McDowell, Grite Apanaviciute and Raine Thompson set a pool record with a time of 7:35.99 in the women's 800-free relay. Michael Pryor, Pedro Oliveira, Alex Burtch and Carlos Almeida also set a new pool mark in the men's event with a time of 6:47.46.
