Chinese Championships Again Highlighted By Several National Records; Yang Junxuan Sets Mark in 100 Freestyle

Impressive speed was again on display at the Chinese National Short Course Championships in Beijing. After the first two days of competition offered a world record and several national marks, Day Three provided much of the same. Among the leading performances was the 51.78 Chinese standard in the women’s 100-meter freestyle by Yang Junxuan. A staple for China in international action, Yang edged out Cheng Yujie (52.57) and Li Bingjie (52.65).

Li was back on the blocks later in the session, winning the 800 freestyle in the sixth-fastest time in history. Having set the world record in the 400 freestyle on Thursday, Li clocked 8:02.09 to triumph over 32 laps. On the men’s side, the event featured a national record by Fen Liwei (7:37.74).

An Asian record of 29.19 went to Tang Qianting in the women’s 50 breaststroke, as she prevailed by more than a second. Meanwhile, multiple Olympic medalist Zhang Yufei registered a victory in the women’s 100 butterfly, covering the distance in 55.46. Gold in the men’s 400 individual medley was earned by Huang Zhiwei in 4:06.68 and rising butterfly star Chen Juner was the winner of the 50 fly in 22.72.

Peng Xuwei went 2:03.07 to capture the women’s 200 backstroke and the men’s 100 backstroke was won by Wang Gukailai in 51.98. Other victors included Yu Yiting in the women’s 200 IM (2:06.05), Pan Zhanle in the men’s 200 freestyle (1:42.66) and Qin Haiyang in the men’s 200 breaststroke (2:03.08).
