China’s Qin Haiyang broke the World Junior Record in the men’s 200 IM during the fourth heat of prelims of the event at the FINA World Championships. Qin touched second in his heat in 1:59.01.

That time broke the World Junior Record of 1:59.12 set by the USA’s Michael Andrew in March. However, the time is nowhere close to the fastest all-time swim for an 18-and-under swimmer, as Michael Phelps swam a 1:55.94 when he was 18 years old back in 2003. However, FINA did not recognize World Junior Records until 2014.

Qin ended up qualifying eighth for the semi-finals.
