Cesar Cielo Sizzles in 50 Free at Brazilian Nationals

RIO DE JANEIRO – Cesar Cielo had another strong swim on day two of Brazilian Nationals.

A day after lighting up the 50 fly and the 100 free with a leadoff, Cielo smoked the 50 free with a relay leadoff.

The Minas squad of Cielo (21.60), Felipe Martins (21.96), Italo Duarte (21.70) and Fernando Da Silva (22.28) put up a winning time of 1:27.54 in the men’s 200-meter free relay.  Cielo’s time came up a bit short of his second-ranked season best of 21.39 from the Maria Lenk Trophy meet.

Pinheiros’ Bruno Fratus (22.24), Marcelo Chierighini (21.53), Leonardo Alcover (22.01) and Joao De Lucca (21.80) nearly caught Minas with a second-place 1:27.58.

Joanna Maranhao set a meet record in the women’s 400-meter IM with a time of 4:41.00. Gabriele Goncalves finished second in the distance medley with a time of 4:51.40, while Nathalia Almeida placed third in 4:52.97.

Larissa Oliveira posted a 1:59.73 to set the meet record in the women’s 200-meter free.  That’s just off Manuella Lyrio’s South American record of 1:59.52 set last year at the 2013 World Championships. Lyrio took second tonight in 1:59.99 with Jessica De Bruin claiming third in 2:00.14.

Daynara De Paula just missed her meet record in the women’s 100-meter fly with a time of 58.36.  She set the mark last year with a time of 58.35.  Daiene Dias touched second in 59.33 after posting a 58.49 in prelims.  Dandara Mendes took third overall in 59.63.

Joao De Lucca won the men’s 200-meter free in 1:48.84 after clocking a 1:48.66 in prelims.  Luiz Lopes took second in 1:49.16 with Joao Amorim grabbing third in 1:50.26.

Thiago Pereira claimed the men’s 100-meter fly crown in 52.27 with Nicholas Dos Santos and Lucas Salatta tying for second with matching 52.85s.  Glauber Silva also cleared 53 seconds with a fourth-place 52.94.

Leonardo De Deus raced his way to a 1:58.53 to win the men’s 200-meter backstroke title going away. Fabio Santi had the closest finish with a second-place 2:01.34, while Nathan Bighetti earned third in 2:02.30.

Brandonn Cruz topped the men’s 400-meter IM by a wide margin with a 4:17.48, while Lucas Oliveira finished second overall in 4:27.04.  Icaro Pereira wound up third in 4:27.27.

Thalandra Cavalcanti won the women’s 200-meter back in 2:17.60.  Marina De Nascimento hit the wall second in 2:18.18 with Isabela Silva placing third in 2:21.15.

SESI’s Priscila De Souza (25.71), Etienne Medeiros (24.37), Jessica De Bruin (25.95) and Daynara De Paula (25.64) cruised to victory in the women’s 200-meter free relay with a 1:41.67.
