Carles Coll Marti, Chase Travis Lead Virginia Tech to Wins Against Queens

Virginia Tech’s swim teams races for the first time in 2023 against Queens University, and a few Tennessee swimmers were present while most of their their teammates were securing a dominant win against Missouri. Virginia Tech’s men came out on top by a margin of 146-to-108 while the women earned a 151-103 victory.

A huge performance by Carles Coll Marti saw the junior from Spain earn wins in the 200 freestyle (1:38.16), 200 breaststroke (1:57.06) and 200 IM (1:48.86). Coll Marti then swam the second leg on VT’s winning 200 free relay, joining with Youssef RamadanWill Koeppen and Luis Dominguez to swim a time of 1:19.83. Forest WebbCobi Lopez Miro, Ramadan and Dominguez won the 200 medley relay in 1:27.96, while Ramadan clocked 43.71 for a win in the 100 free.

Virginia Tech’s women, meanwhile, were led by Chase Travis, who won the 1000 free (10:07.14) and 500 free (4:59.03), while Emma Atkinson, sixth in the 200 backstroke at last year’s NCAA Championships, won that event in 1:57.23.

Virginia Tech racked up many first-place wins during their meet against Queens and Tennessee. The Tech men beat Queens 146-108, and the women won 151-103. Tennessee counted as an exhibition, so they do not have a final score.

HIGHLIGHTS

Men

The Hokie relays didn’t disappoint. To begin the meet, Forest WebbCobi Lopez MiroYoussef Ramadan and Luis Dominguez placed first in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:27.96. Finishing off the day, Ramadan, Carles Coll MartiWill Koeppen and Dominguez placed first in the 200 free relay with a final time of 1:19.83. 

Showing his endurance, Dominguez placed first in the men’s 1000 free with a time of 9:22.44. Following right behind him, Nico Garcia Saiz placed second with a time of 9:24.44 and Nikolas Lee-Bishop placed third with a time of 9:34.35. Continuing the top distance swims, Dominguez also placed first in the 500 free with a time of 4:33.70. Keith Myburgh followed right behind, placing second with a time of 4:35.50 and Lee-Bishop placing third with a time of 4:37.51.

Coll Marti showed speed and diversity in the pool. He placed first in the 200 free with a time of 1:38.16 and first in the 200 breast with a time of 1:57.06. Coll Marti also placed first in the men’s 200 IM with a time of 1:48.86.

Ramadan always proves his speed during freestyle events. Placing first, Ramadan finished the 100 free with a time of 43.71. He finished the 50 free with a time of 19.52, placing second.

Women

Like the men, the women’s relays placed high. Starting the day off strong, Carmen Weiler SastreFanni GyurinovicsKarisa Franz and Madelyn Moore placed first in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:41.19. Gyurinovics, Franz, Emily Claesson and Anna Summers finished out the meet with a first place win in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:33.86. 

Chase Travis dominated distance events. Placing first in the women’s 1000 free, Travis finished with a time of 10:07.14. She went on to win the women’s 500 free with a time of 4:59.03.

Sarah ShackelfordEmma Atkinson and Madelyn Moore placed high in freestyle. Shackelford finished first in the 50 free with a time of 23.43 and Moore followed right behind in second place with a time of 23.43. Shackelford also won the 100 free, finishing at 50.70 with Moore in second place at 50.85. Atkinson won the 200 free event with a time of 1:49.10.

Weiler Sastre, Emma Atkinson and Caroline Bentz continue to have strong performances in backstroke. Placing first, Weiler Sastre finished the 100 back with a time of 54.69. Right behind her in second place, Bentz finished with a time of 55.08. Atkinson placed first in the 200 back with a final time of 1:57.23. Weiler Sastre fell right behind her in second place with a time of 1:58.82 and Bentz in third at 2:00.07.

Placing first in butterfly, Morgan Miller finished the 200 fly event with a time of 2:02.65. Karisa Franz finished first in the women’s 100 fly with a time of 55.25.

Morgan Miller was .46 behind teammate Chase Travis taking second in the 500 free.
