Canadian Trials: Julia Wilkinson Downs 100 Back National Record Twice

MONTREAL, Canada, April 2. JULIA Wilkinson lowered the national record in the women's 100 back twice during the second day of swimming at the Canadian Trials held in Montreal.

After first breaking Erin Gammel's 1:01.93 set in 2005 with a top-seeded time of 1:01.76 during prelims, Wilkinson dropped the record even further with a victorious time of 1:01.41 during finals. Elizabeth Wycliffe placed second in 1:02.50.

In the men's 200 free, Colin Russell upset national-record holder Brent Hayden, 1:46.99 to 1:47.61. Russell nearly downed Hayden's record of 1:46.85 set in 2005. Andrew Hurd (1:48.57) and Adam Sioui (1:48.72) completed the top four.

In an exciting finish, Jake Tapp and Rob Taylor notched a dead heat in the men's 100 back with matching times of 55.53, while Matt Rose placed just behind them in 55.66.

The close calls continued, this time in the women's 100 breast. Annamay Pierse touched out Jillian Tyler, 1:08.32 to 1:08.54, while Erica Morningstar settled for third place in 1:08.78.

For the third straight event, a title came down to a photo finish. Stephanie Horner hit the wall in 4:10.16 to win the women's 400 free, while Savannah King took second in 4:10.28.

The quartet of Brad Hankewich, Joel Greenshields, Kevin Gillespie and David Woodman snatched the men's 400 free relay in 3:26.45.

In Paralympic events, Max Olivier won the women's 50 back in 1:53.93, while Brian Hill claimed the men's 100 back in 1:05.26. Valerie Grand-Maison then captured the women's 100 back title in 1:10.58.
