Canada’s Swimmers with a Disability Team heads to Paralympic World Cup

OTTAWA, Canada. May 2. FIVE members of the Canadian Swimmer with a Disability Team will compete against the World’s fastest at the 2006 Visa Paralympic World Cup in Manchester England on May 6th.

Veteran Paralympic swimmers Stephanie Dixon of Victoria and Andrew Haley of Toronto will lead the 5 member squad during this one day competition. Also competing for Canada will be 2004 Parlympic Team members Brad Sales of London, ON and Andrea Coles of Thunder Bay. Laura Jenson of Fort St. John, B.C will be a new addition to the Canadian powerhouse.

“The Paralympic World Cup will be a great catalyst in preparation toward the 2006 IPC Swimming World Championships for Swimmers with a Disability” states National SWAD Coach Craig McCord. “It will also be a great opportunity for our swimmers to gain international experience leading up to the 2008 Beijing Paralympics.”

Canadian Broadcaster CBC Sports will air a 4 hours special on the 2006 Visa Paralympic World Cup on Saturday, May 27th from 2-6 pm EST. The show will highlight Swimming, Athletics and Wheel Chair Basketball events from Manchester.

About the Visa Paralympic World Cup

The Visa Paralympic World Cup is an exciting new global event for elite athletes with a disability.

It is the biggest international annual multi-sport competition outside of the Paralympic Games and is being staged in Manchester, Great Britain for at least its first three years.

Manchester successfully hosted the 2002 Commonwealth Games where the events for athletes with disabilities were fully integrated into the event which, was well supported by spectators and athletes alike.

In conjunction with the International Paralympic Committee and the British Paralympic Association, four sports – Athletics, Swimming, Track Cycling and Wheelchair Basketball – were chosen for inclusion in the Visa Paralympic World Cup.
