Cameron van der Burgh of South Africa lowered his own National Record while swimming in the preliminary heats of the 50 breast at the 2017 FINA World Championships.

Van der Burgh’s previous record of 26.62 was posted in prelims at the 2015 FINA World Championships and marked a triple threat as a new South African and African Record, as well as tying the existing World Record set by Great Britain’s Adam Peaty at the 2014 European Championships.

The South African and three-time Olympian has been a staple in the breaststroke competition for close to a decade now, setting his first SCM world record in 2008 and first LCM world record in 2009.
