California’s Caitlin Leverenz Rattles American, NCAA, U.S. Open Record in 400-Yard IM

FEDERAL WAY, Washington, February 24. THIS evening, at the Pacific 12 Championships, California's Caitlin Leverenz put on a show in the women's 400-yard IM, nearly tracking down the American, NCAA and U.S. Open record held by Julia Smit.

Leverenz scorched the field with a stunning time of 3:58.46 to move to third all time in the event's history. Smit owns the best ever with a 3:58.23 from the 2010 Pacific 10 Championships, while Florida's Elizabeth Beisel checked in with a sterling time of 3:58.35 at the 2012 Southeastern Championships last week. Leverenz is just the fourth swimmer to break 4:00, with Katinka Hosszu of USC also being sub-4:00 with a fourth-ranked 3:58.86 from November 2011.

Leverenz's previous best time had been a 4:00.59 set at the Georgia Fall Invitational in 2011. Notably, Hosszu did not compete in the distance medley at Pac 12s this year.
