BERKELEY – The University of California swimming and diving teams cruised past Wisconsin on Friday night thanks to numerous 1-2-3 finishes and multiple wins from Elizabeth Pelton, Marina Garcia, Ryan Murphy and Chuck Katis. The Golden Bear women came out ahead 161-124, while the men earned a 169-116 win.

The Wisconsin women got off to a fast start, as Annie Tamblyn, Anna Meinholz, Ivy Martin and Chase Kinney won the opening 200 medley relay in 1:41.30, just ahead of Cal’s 1:41.65. Jenny Holtzen followed that up with a second straight win for the Badgers in the 1000 free at 10:01.84. However, Cal crushed any hopes of a win with victories in the next six events.

Elizabeth Pelton topped the 200 free in 1:47.58 in a 1-2-3 Cal finish to kick-start the Golden Bear onslaught. Missy Franklin followed that up with a win in the 100 back (54.36) in another 1-2-3 finish for Cal, before Marina Garcia wrapped up the 100 breast victory with a 1:02.93. Freshman Noemie Thomas led another 1-2-3 finish for the Bears in the 200 fly with her 2:00.98, only .04 ahead of teammate Rachel Bootsma (2:01.02). Farida Osman (50 free, 23.14) and Anne Kastler (3-meter diving, 305.10) won the next two events to give Cal a huge advantage in the team standings. Kastler also won the 1-meter with 284.48 points later in the meet.

Wisconsin’s Ivy Martin finally ended the streak in the 100 free, barely out-touching Missy Franklin in the race, 49.13 to 49.20. Elizabeth Pelton and Marina Garcia picked up their second wins of the night in the next two events, with Pelton claiming the 200 back in 1:54.58 and Garcia grabbing the 200 breast in 2:15.79.

Wisconsin’s Jenny Holtzen (500 free, 4:52.15) and Ivy Martin (100 fly, 53.93) secured their second wins of the meet in the next two events. Cal’s Celina Li cruised to a 4:21.14 in the 400 IM to seal the deal for Cal. Wisconsin’s foursome of Ivy Martin, Chase Kinney, Annie Tamblyn and Caroline Palm topped the final 400 free relay in 3:23.85 to close out the meet.

Meanwhile, the California men won 12 of the 16 events contested to run away with the dual meet win. Ryan Murphy, Connor Hoppe, Justin Lynch and Henry Chung got things started with a win in the 200 medley relay in 1:27.28, topping Cal’s A relay of Jacob Pebley, Chuck Katis, Seth Stubblefield and Tyler Messerschmidt (1:28.15).

Ryan Murphy and Chuck Katis each added two individual wins during the meet to lead the Bears. Murphy picked up a sprint double, topping the 100 back in 47.20 and the 100 free in 43.78; his 100 free time ranks fourth in the country this season. Katis swam away with wins in the 100 breast (54.37) and 200 breast (2:01.42).

Cal finished first and second in a number of events to solidify their win.
