California got its redemption after the DQ in the 400 medley relay last night with an NCAA and US Open Record in the 200 medley relay tonight. Kathleen Baker (23.62), Abbey Weitzeil (26.67), Noemie Thomas (22.70) and Farida Osman (21.11) swam a 1:34.10 to break Stanford’s record from last year at 1:34.15. That time will stand as the American Record because of Thomas’ Canadian nationality and Osman’s Egyptian nationality. Texas A&M was second at 1:34.85 and Stanford was third at 1:34.90.

Cal got some serious pressure from Texas A&M, who was searching for its first NCAA relay title in school history. Beryl Gastaldello (23.85), Jorie Caneta (26.40), Sarah Gibson (22.43) and Kristin Malone (22.17) swam for the Aggies. Stanford raced to a third place finish from lane 8 with Ally Howe (24.08), Kim Williams (27.12), Janet Hu (22.75) and Simone Manuel (20.95).

Baker had the fastest backstroke split at 23.62. Indiana’s Lilly King had the fastest breaststroke split at 25.62, the only swimmer under 26. Gibson swam the fastest fly split and Manuel had the fastest anchor split.

This is the 5th time California has won the NCAA title in the 200 medley, joining the teams from 2015, 2012, 2011 and 2000 as champions. The Pac-12 has now won nine of the last eleven NCAA titles in the 200 medley relay.
