Caeleb Dressel Swims Fastest 50 Split Ever; Ryan Murphy Looks For Four-peat

The action and drama continued Friday morning at the 2017 NCAA Division I Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships as more records look to fall down at the finals session tonight. Chase Kalisz, Joseph Schooling, Townley Haas, Fabian Schwingenschlogl and Ryan Murphy will all look to defend their titles in their respective races tonight.

400 IM

Georgia senior Chase Kalisz lead the qualifiers Friday morning in his pet event, the 400 IM. Kalisz, the Olympic silver medalist will be the top seed headed into tonight with a relaxed 3:37.18. His teammate, Jay Litherland is the second seed at 3:38.39. It will be a tight race for second between Litherland, Florida’s Mark Szaranek and Georgia’s Gunnar Bentz who all swam 3:38s this morning.

Texas’ Jonathan Roberts (3:38.91), Virginia Tech’s Robert Own (3:38.97), Stanford’s Abrahm Devine (3:39.44) and California’s Andrew Seliskar (3:40.64) also qualified for the A-final.

100 Fly

Texas senior Jack Conger leads the qualifiers in the 100 fly with a 44.44 to improve on his best time as the fifth fastest performer all-time. Conger leads Florida junior Caeleb Dressel (44.49) and Texas junior Joseph Schooling (44.97) as the only swimmers under 45 this morning. Conger has been second and third the last two years in the event and will look to unseat the two-time defending champion in the event in Schooling.

NC State’s Ryan Held (45.21), Cal’s Zheng Quah (45.27), Cal’s Matthew Josa (45.31), Missouri’s Andrew Sansoucie (45.45) and Indiana’s Vini Lanza (45.47) will also swim in the A-final tonight.

Townley Haas of Texas backed up his 500 free last night, where he became the fifth fastest performer in history, with a solid 1:31.97 200 free this morning. Haas will be looking to repeat in the event after he broke the American Record last year. USC’s Dylan Carter is the second seed going into tonight with a 1:32.17 and Indiana’s Blake Pieroni is the third seed at 1:32.42.

NC State’s Soren Dahl (1:32.55), Arizona State’s Cameron Craig (1:32.84), Florida’s Maxime Rooney (1:32.88), Harvard’s Dean Farris (1:33.05) and Wisconsin’s Brett Pinfold (1:33.21) will also swim in the A-final that features three freshman.

100 Breast

After splitting the only sub-50 point 100 breast last night in the 400 medley relay, Will Licon leads the qualifiers in the 100 breast with the only sub-51 swim. Licon leads the prelims at 50.87 ahead of Virginia Tech’s Brandon Fiala (51.30) and California’s Connor Hoppe (51.50). This is the first year Licon has swum the 100 breaststroke at the NCAA Championships, after swimming the 400 IM the last three years.

Auburn’s Michael Duderstadt (51.75), Missouri’s Fabian Schwingenschlogl (51.76), South Carolina’s Nils Wich-Glasen (51.86), Southern Cal’s Carsten Vissering (51.91) and Duke’s Peter Kropp (52.06) will also swim in the A-final. The championship final will feature five seniors.

100 Back

California’s Ryan Murphy could be the second swimmer to ever win four NCAA titles in the 100 backstroke after John Naber of USC did it from 1974-1977. Murphy will enter the A-final as the third seed at 44.78 behind Alabama’s Connor Oslin (44.59) and Texas’ John Shebat (44.63). Oslin is now the fourth fastest performer all-time in the event, while Shebat moved to sixth.

Southern Cal’s Ralf Tribuntsov (45.00), Louisville’s Grigory Tarasevich (45.13), Alabama’s Luke Kaliszak (45.25) and NC State’s Andreas Vazaios (45.26) will swim in the A-final. There was a tie for eighth place with Georgia’s Taylor Dale and Penn State’s Shane Ryan tying for the last spot in the final at 45.27.

200 Medley Relay

Every 200 medley relay team in the top eight swam a 1:23 this morning, as the race will be extremely tight tonight for the title. Texas swam a 1:23.17 to lead the teams into tonight with John Shebat (21.02), Will Licon (23.31), Joseph Schooling (20.03) and Brett Ringgold (18.81). Three of those swimmers swam on the 400 last night that swam the fastest time in history.

Texas leads a close heat with California (1:23.27) and Missouri (1:23.29) trailing right behind them. Florida (1:23.37), NC State (1:23.53), Louisville (1:23.87), Alabama (1:23.93) and Stanford (1:23.97) will swim in the A-final.

Of note, Florida junior Caeleb Dressel swam the fastest 50 free split in history with a 17.71 on the end of Florida’s relay. Cal’s Ryan Murphy (20.79), Missouri’s Fabian Schwingenschlogl (22.94), Louisville’s Josh Quallen (19.97) and Dressel had the fastest splits across the board on that relay.
