BYU vs. Washington

FEDERAL WAY, Washington, January 11. WASHINGTON swimmers Ivan Perhat and Scott Spansail both had two first-place finishes but BYU slipped by the Huskies, 148-140, in a non-conference dual meet on Friday afternoon at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center.

BYU took an automatic 26 point lead due to scoring their diving team. Washington does not field a diving team and if not for spotting the Cougars those 26 points, the Huskies would have won the meet.

Perhat continues to lead the Huskies in the sprint freestyle events, picking up a pair of victories in the 50 free (20.86) and 100 free (45.14), while Spansail continues to pace the Huskies in the distance freestyle events. He won the 500 free in a time of 4:30.28 and the 1000 free in a time of 9:28.62.

In the 100 breaststroke, Washington's Russ Mahan edged out teammate Yonatan Cohen, winning in a time of 56.28 to Cohen's 56.95.

Cohen came back to defeat Mahan in the 200 breast with a time of 2:06.44. Mahan took second in a time of 2:07.12.

The 200 backstroke was also closely contested between two Huskies, with Taylor Brugh winning in a time of 1:51.60. Henry Hudson finished just one-tenth of a second behind Brugh in a time of 1:51.70.

Andre Blyth also had a first place finish for Washington, winning the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:49.91.

Also for the Huskies, Brugh added a second-place finish in the 100 back (51.10), David Bai was second in the 200 free (1:41.83), Hudson finished second in the 200 individual medley (1:53.83) and Evan Bernier took second in the 100 fly (49.43).

"It was a good meet for us," said Washington head coach Whitney Hite. "It is the second meet in a row that we've done a great job of stepping up and racing well.

"It's also the second time in a week we've met a top twenty-five team and come up just a little bit short; there is real value in that. This is a team that is getting better as we go. I'm excited about where we are going and where we will be at the end."

Washington, 3-7 overall, hosts UC Davis tomorrow night at 6 p.m. That meet will also be held in Federal Way at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center.

Special thanks to Washington for contributing this report.
