Buffalo Downs St. Bonaventure, 166-132

BUFFALO, New York, November 16. THE University at Buffalo women's swimming and diving team claimed its first victory of the season, downing regional rival St. Bonaventure, 166-132, on Wednesday in the Alumni Arena Natatorium. Freshman Samantha Palma (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) scored three individual victories for the Bulls, while fellow newcomers Meili Carpenter (Boulder, CO/Fairview) and Jessica Ballard (Montreal, Quebec/Academic Magnet) each inked a duo of wins for Buffalo.

The Bulls cruised out to an immediate lead and never looked back, taking the first event of the evening, the 200-yard medley relay. The foursome of Ballard, Ashley Schaffert (Lockport, NY/Lockport), Samantha Eckert (Eden, NY/Eden) and Meghan Lafferty (East Aurora, NY/East Aurora) touched the wall in a time of 1:48.66. UB would then extend its lead, as the Bulls took first, second and third place in the 100-yard backstroke event. Ballard cruised to the victory in a time of 59.51 while Rachel Sorg (Ottawa, Ontario/Canterbury) turned in a time of 59.58 for second place and Caitlin Reilly (Brockville, Ontario/John McCrae Secondary) streamlined into third place in a time of 1:00.60. Reilly later won the 200-yard backstroke in a time of 2:08.52.

Palma had a tremendous day for the Bulls, as the freshman won the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 24.75, the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 53.57 and the 100-yard butterfly, touching the wall in a time of 58.41. Ballard, meanwhile, tallied a win for the Bulls in the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2:11.07, in addition to her earlier win in the 100-yard backstroke.

Carpenter continued her diving prowess, winning both the one-meter and the three-meter board events. The freshman, unbeaten in the one-meter event this season, scored 278.75 points in the short board and threw in 298.50 points to take the three-meter event. Other individual point winners for the Bulls included senior Kahla Walkinshaw (Hamilton, Ontario/Westmount SS) who won the 200-yard butterfly in a time of 2:10.56.
