Brown Hires Texas Assistant Mitch Dalton to Lead Women’s Program

Brown University on Monday announced the hiring of Mitch Dalton to lead its women’s swimming and diving program.

Dalton spent six years at the University of Texas with the women’s swimming and diving program since being hired in 2020, most recently as an association head coach. The Longhorns won four Big 12 and two SEC team championships with Dalton on the staff. Texas finished in the top three of NCAAs all six seasons with Dalton.

“I’d like to thank Grace Calhoun for this opportunity,” Dalton said in a press release. “At a time of uncertainty for Olympic sports, her vision, belief, and support for swimming and diving stand out. I am also grateful to Ray Grant for leading the search committee and for making me feel so supported in this move. It was clear from the outset that Brown cares about its student-athletes, its coaches, and its women’s swimming and diving program. I can’t wait to meet the team, speak with alumni, hit the recruiting trail, and get to work to return Brown to the top of the Ivy League.”

Dalton replaces Kate Kovenock, who last month departed after 12 years in charge of the Bears.

Before Austin, Dalton spent five years as the National Junior Team Director for USA Swimming. He led talent identification for the governing body and shepherded junior teams through the World Junior Championships in 2015 and 2017 and the 2016 Junior Pan Pacific Championships.

The Australian international competed at James Madison, graduating in 2007, then began his coaching career there. He has experience in the Ivy League after five seasons as an assistant for the Princeton men’s program, where the Tigers won four Ivy League titles and qualified swimmers for NCAAs three times. He was an assistant coach for two seasons at George Washington’s men’s and women’s programs.

“It has been a privilege to work alongside Mitch these past six years, and I know his leadership, communication skills, and strategic vision will be a tremendous asset to the Brown Women’s Swimming and Diving program,” Texas women’s head coach Carol Capitani said. “I am genuinely excited to see the team thrive under his direction.”

“Mitch Dalton is one of the best human beings in our sport,” said Matt Kredich, Tennessee’s Director of Swimmign and Diving and the former head coach of Brown’s men’s and women’s programs. “He connects deeply with people and has a unique ability to draw out the qualities each athlete needs to truly excel.”

Dalton was also recently accepted to Brown’s Master’s program in Organizational Leadership.
