Brooks Fail Joins USC as Assistant Coach to Round Out Lea Maurer’s Staff

Brooks Fail was hired this week as an assistant coach at USC, the final hire for Lea Maurer in his first staff as full-time head coach of the Trojans.

Fail is fresh off his NCAA swimming career, an 11-time All-American at the University of Arizona. He finaled in three events at the 2022 NCAA Championships, finishing as high as fifth in the men’s 500 freestyle. He is the reigning Pac-12 champion in the 1,650 freestyle. He left Arizona as the school-record holder in the 1,650 free (14:31.38) and 400 individual medley (3:38.55).

“Brooks is one of the toughest athletes around and a tremendous team leader,” Maurer said in a USC statement. “What impresses me most about Brooks is the great person that he is. I believe he will prove to be a great coach and we couldn’t be more pleased to have him joining our staff.”

Fail made the national team for the first time in 2021. He appears to be swimming on in his career, posting earlier this month to social media that he’s “onto the next chapter” after five years with the Wildcats. The education major was born and raised in Tucson, so this is the first major move away from home in his career.

Fail finished fifth in the 400 free and eighth in the 200 butterfly at the 2021 Olympic Trials.

Maurer had the interim tag removed as head coach in April. Fail joins former Arizona associate head coach Peter Richardson, hired in June, Kevin Rapien and Meghan Hawthorne on Maurer’s first full-time coaching staff.
