British Trials, Day 4 Finals: Holly Hibbott Holds Off Amelie Blocksidge To Win 400 Free

Holly Hibbott held off Amelie Blocksidge – ten years her junior – to claim the 400 free title at the Aquatics Centre in London.

Hibbott, who trains at Bath Performance Centre, built up a 2.31-sec lead by halfway and although Blocksidge made inroads over the second half of the race, the gap was still 1.34secs at the final turn.

Blocksidge came back on the last 50 but Hibbott held strong against the youngster to win in 4:11.67 to 4:12.09 with Fleur Lewis third in 4:14.10.

Hibbott’s winning time was more than six seconds off her 4:05.31 PB she set en-route to Commonwealth silver in 2018 in Glasgow and well outside the QT of 4:04.98.

Blocksidge added 400 silver to 1500 gold with the 14-year-old setting a British age group record after going 0.42 inside Anne Bochmann’s mark of 4:12.51 from July 2008, a little over eight months before the teenager was born.

Lucy Fox was fourth in 4:14.30 ahead of Michaella Glenister (4:15.27), Leah Crisp (4:15.88), Megan Barnes (4:16.61) and Jemima Hall (4:17.78).
