British Olympian Antony James Pleads Not Guilty to Sex Charges, Will Face Trial

British Olympic swimmer Antony James will face trial after pleading not guilty to charges of sexual offenses against children.

James, 33, appeared in court in Plymouth, England, on Monday. A total of 18 charges were read against him, including five counts of rape and, “multiple counts of sexual activity with a child under the age of 16, inciting a child to engage in sexual activity and inviting a third party to have sex with a child.” He also faces two charges of assault causing bodily harm. His arrest in September had cited 21 charges.

The incidents are said to have occurred with three female victims. The allegations cover incidents that occurred between 2012 and 2022.

James pleaded not guilty and was released on conditional bail. He will appear next in Plymouth Crown Court on Nov. 17. The trial is expected to take place next summer.

James worked as a student police officer. He was suspended at the time of his arrest last month and is no longer in the employ of the Devon and Cornwall Police.

James swam for Team GB in the 2012 Olympics as a sprint butterflier. He represented the country at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and the 2011 World Championships. His career ran through the 2016 British Olympic Trials. He won a gold medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in the men’s 100 fly and was on the England 400 medley relay that won bronze at that meet in Delhi, India.
