Boston College Sweeps Fordham

The Boston College Swimming and Diving Teams traveled to Bronx, NY, for a competition with Fordham University. The ACC’s Eagles were victorious in both matchups with the A-10’s Rams.

BRONX, New York / LEWISBURG, Penn. — The Boston College swim and dive team wrapped up two days of road meets, capping off the weekend with wins over Fordham and Bucknell. The Eagles earned first-place finishes in 21 out of 32 events against Fordham and 19 out of 32 events against Bucknell. The team is back in action for its final home meet of the season on Jan. 25 against rival Boston University.

 

WOMEN’S HIGHLIGHTS

vs. Fordham

  • The team of Maura Grimes, Taylor Covington, Victoria Lin and Haley Dolan placed first in the 200 yard medley relay with a 1:45.78 finish.

  • Lindsey Ryalls won the 1000 yard freestyle with a 10:32.04 performance.

  • Grimes placed first in the 100 yard backstroke, finishing in 57.78.

  • Alexa Lantin earned the top spot in the 100 yard breaststroke with a 1:06.89 finish. She also placed first in the 200 yard breaststroke, finishing in 2:21.41.

  • Dolan won the 50 yard free with a 23.84 performance.

  • Kristina Fecarotta placed first in the 500 yard freestyle, finishing in 5:06.71.

  • Sofia Zinis, Ashleigh Scott, Ali Kea and Dolan combined for the first-place finish in the 400 yard freestyle relay with a 3:27.14 finish.

  • The Eagles finished with 150.5 points to Fordham’s 149.5.

MEN’S HIGHLIGHTS

  • Sam Roche, Matt Clark, Colin O’Leary and Damion Geoghegan Ribeiro combined for a first-place, 1:34.15 finish in the 200 yard medley relay.

  • Zach Szmania took first in the 1000 yard freestyle with a 9:33.27 finish. He also finished first in the 500 yard freestyle, finishing in 4:48.71.

  • Roche earned the top spot in the 100 yard backstroke with a 51:29 finish. He also earned the first-place finish in the 100 yard butterfly, finishing in 51.74.

  • Clark placed first in the 100 yard breaststroke, finishing in 57.19. The freshman also placed first in the 100 yard freestyle with a 45.88 finish.

  • Cole Gvozdas won the 200 yard butterfly with a 1:56.66 finish.

  • Dale Nickerson won both the 1-meter dive with a score of 313.57 and the 3-meter dive with a 318.00 score.

  • O’Leary placed first in the 200 yard backstroke, finishing in 1:53.40.

  • Peter Shepanzyk won the 200 yard breaststroke with a 2:04.54 finish.

  • Geoghegan Ribeiro, Matt Szekely, Michael Hinton and Max Threlkeld combined to take the top spot in the 400 yard freestyle relay, finishing in 3:08.51.

  • The team combined for a score of 183.5 to Fordham’s 96.5.

Bronx, N.Y. – (January 17, 2020) – The Fordham swimming & diving team was back in action for the first time since December on Friday night, taking on the Boston College Eagles at the Col. Francis B. Messmore Aquatic Center.

The Eagles and Rams were neck and neck throughout the women’s competition, but it was Boston College winning the final event and taking a one-point decision from the Rams, 150.5-149.5.  In the men’s competition, Boston College finished with a 183.5-96.5 victory.

Fordham was led on the women’s side by Amelia Bullock, who won the 100 (55.56) and 200 (2:02.86) butterfly events.  She was also a part of the Rams’ 200 medley relay with Michelle Martin, Hannah McGee, and Theresa Mullen, which tied for first with a time of 1:45.78.

Martin also had a strong meet for the Rams, winning the 100 freestyle in 52.58 seconds and taking second in the 50 freestyle (24.00) and the 100 butterfly (56.41), as did Vaula Vekkeli, who grabbed first in the 200 individual medley (2:06.65) and second in the 100 (58.09) and 200 (2:24.44) breaststroke events.

Other winners for the Rams included Clare Culver in the 200 freestyle (1:53.60), Paulina Watson in the 200 backstroke (2:04.00), Molly Dunn in the one-meter dive (252.22) and Natalie Ortof in the three-meter dive (271.50).

In the men’s events, the Rams won three events, beginning with Josh Stegen taking the 200 freestyle in 1:42.77.  Bryce Bollesen then placed first in the 50 freestyle in 21.48 seconds with Nathaniel Guenther finishing first in 1:57.43 in the 200 individual medley.

Patrick Wilson had a pair of second place finishes in the 100 (58.46) and 200 (2:09.52) breaststroke for the Rams.  Christopher Sleutjes grabbed second in the 1000 freestyle at 9:49.96 with Ethan Murray snagging second in the 200 butterfly (1:57.85).  Connor Wright (200 back – 1:56.50) and Casey Sawyer(100 fly – 52.54) also posted second place finishes in their respective events.

The Rams have a quick turnaround as the team hosts La Salle and Richmond for a tri-meet on Saturday, January 18th, beginning at 1:00 PM.
