Six Broncos tallied multiple wins as Boise State captured 14 of 16 events for a 211-89 victory at Idaho Saturday in Moscow. The win over the Vandals is the seventh straight for the Broncos in the all-time series.

Junior Sam Wicks and sophomore Brittany Aoyama each had four wins as Wicks recorded three in individual events (100 back, 50 free, 200 IM) and one in the 200 medley relay, while Aoyama had two individual victories (100 fly, 100 free) on top of being part of the winning 200 medley and 200 free relay teams.

Four Broncos recorded a pair of wins apiece Saturday. Sophomore Felicity Cann captured the 200 and 500 frees, senior Heather Harper swept the 100 and 200 breasts, freshman Emma Chard was part of both winning relay teams and senior Erin Kohlbeck swept the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events.

Kohlbeck posted scores of 278.92 and 289.20 in the 1-meter and 3-meter events, respectively, both exceeding the NCAA standards to qualify for the Zone E meet in March. Sophomore Karli Kriewall also qualified for the Zone E meet with a 3-meter score of 286.87.

The Broncos dominated the diving events, going 1-2-3 in both disciplines. Kriewall finished second in the 3-meter and third in the 1-meter, while sophomore Jordan Marthens was second in the 1-meter and third in the 3-meter.

Boise State staked itself to a big lead right away, as Wicks, Harper, Aoyama and Chard recorded their second win of the week in the 200 medley relay, this time in a time of 1:43.28. The Broncos then got a top-three sweep in the second event, the 1,000 free, as junior Blake Balogh (10:27.41), freshman Amelia Draney (10:29.77) and junior Emri Moore (10:32.17) went 1-2-3 to earn the maximum 16 points.

The Broncos would take the first five events, including another top-three sweep in the 100 back, before Idaho’s Jamie Sterbis edged senior Jessica Bottelberghe by 0.22 of a second in the 200 fly. After three more Bronco wins over the next three events, Rachel Millet delivered the Vandals’ only other win in the 10th event, the 200 back.

Boise State returns to training for the next three weeks until its next meet, when it travels to Corvallis to take on Oregon State on Halloween (Oct. 31).

Idaho Press Release

The Vandal Swim and Dive team had a rough day in the pool today as they took on rival Boise State to open up the 2014-15 season. The Vandals battled hard in every event but came up short in the first meet of the season.

“We love racing great teams and they are a great team,” Coach Mark Sowa said. “We are very competitive but we have to be better at executing our skills. We need to be better at understanding the race plan and finish races. To compete against a team with that caliber, you have to bring it all.”

The Vandals won only two events today, the 200 fly and 200 back, but placed many others in the top four. Junior Jamie Sterbis was the first to win for the Vandals with a time of 2:04.56 in the 200 fly. Four meets later, senior Rachel Millet came through with a win in the 200 back with a time of 2:04.36.

The diving board was not a strength for the Vandals today but there were some positives to come out of it. Senior diver Delaney Peugh posted career bests in both events, 228.60 in the 3-meter dive and 234.52 in the 1-meter dive, hopefully setting the stage for a great year on the board.

“We had a chance to win a couple close races that didn’t go our way today, but it’s still early in the season,” Sowa said. “Our times are faster than they were at this time last year, so there are some positive to come out of this.”

The Vandals will be back in action Friday, Oct. 31st, against Northern Colorado.
