Boise State Holds Onto Lead After Day 2 at Mountain West

SAN ANTONIO – Boise State has maintained their lead with strong swims during the second day of the Mountain West Championship in San Antonio, Texas.

San Diego State follows in a close second after putting up several impressive showings, including a NCAA ‘A’ cut in the 200-yard freestyle relay to start the evening.

Chelsea Bailey (22.61), Anika Apostalon (21.57), Taylor Johnson (22.29), and Whitney Weisz (22.25) won the event in 1:28.72.

Boise State touched the wall second with the team of Samantha Wicks (22.98), Katelyn Martin (21.99), Jessica Bottelberghe (23.06), and Brittany Aoyama (22.29) for a time of 1:30.32.

UNLV followed closely behind with the team of Julia Fehervari (22.97), Michelle Troup (22.25), Elena Gavrilova (22.70), and Lina Rathsack (22.54) for a final time of 1:30.46.

In the 3 mtr diving finals Kyrsta Palmer won her second 2015 MW title with a final score of 3:59.4. She was followed by Ariana Milone (3:38.10) and Erin Kohlbeck (3:37.40).

In the 500-yard freestyle, Air Force sophomore Genevieve Miller had an impressive showing with a final time of 4:42.47 to set new MW Champ record and MW All Time records, eclipsing the previous records of 4:42.99 and 4:42.57 respectively. She was followed by Air Force teammate Sara Menke (4:46.54) and Nevada swimmer Henny Eriksen 4:47.55. All top three swimmers achieved NCAA ‘B’ cuts.

In the 200-yard Individual Medley Nevada swimmer Yawen Li finished in 1:57.59. She was followed by Boise State’s Samantha Wicks (1:58.06) and Nevada teammate Teresa Baerens (1:59.16). All three women achieved NCAA ‘B’ cuts along with Frida Berggren (1:59.63), Arant Medina-Alegria (2:00.31) and Sydney Johansen (2:01.11).

For the final event of the night, San Diego State’s Anika Apostalon touched the wall first in the 50 freestyle in 21.82, an NCAA ‘A’ cut. Chelsea Bailey, San Diego State teammate, finished second in 22.47, with UNLV swimmer Julia Fehervari finishing third in 22.68. Bailey and Fehervari achieved NCAA ‘B’ cuts, along with Taylor Johnson of San Diego State (22.81), Katelyn Martin of Boise State (22.88) and Morgan Ginnis of New Mexico (22.96). Brittany Aoyama of Boise (7th) and Katie Kicklighter of Colorado State (8th) both achieved NCAA ‘B’ cut in the morning swim.
