Boilermaker Aquatics Crowned Team Champs at West Lafayette Futures

The first ever Futures Championships concluded from West Lafayette on Sunday night with hometown Boilermaker Aquatics atop the team standings.

The Women’s 100 free was first on the docket and it was Geena Freriks of Kentucky taking the win at 56.70 ahead of Kaitlyn Schorr of Southwest Stars at 56.84. Third in the race went to Kobie Melton of Huntsville Swim Association at 57.30. Freriks missed the trial cut of 56.49.

The Men’s 100 free went the way of Michael Dugan of Stingrays for his second win of the meet at 51.45. Christopher Kearney finished in second at 51.90 and Jes Stephens of Boilermaker Aquatics finished in third at 51.93.

Nate Hopkins of Boilermaker won the 800 free with an 8:24.32 in which he out dueled William Bresette of Empire Swim Club at 8:25.07. Hayden Curley of Highlander was third from an earlier heat with an 8:28.41.

The Women’s 200 back was a close finish down to the wire with Kelly Leonard of Riptide taking it at 2:16.99 missing the trial cut of 2:16.59. Kayla Churman of Kentucky was right behind her for second at 2:17.66 and Emma Gourdie of Mt. Pleasant was third at 2:17.90. The top three swimmers are all eligible for the junior national cuts that they achieved in finals.

The Men’s 200 back was a near miss by Jake Thomas of Boilermaker at 2:03.81. He missed the cut of 2:03.79. Samuel Marlow of Rockwood was second at 2:06.17 and Tucson Dunn was third from Southern Crescent at 2:06.49. Thomas however did achieve the Senior National cut that was 2:03.99.

The Women’s 1500 was won by Kelly Berger of Kentucky from an earlier heat at 17:07.03. Emily Meckstroth of Michiana Stars was second at 17:10.97 and Alicia Mancilla of Gulliver Swim Club was third at 17:20.31.

The lone trial cut of the night went to 14-year-old Kathleen Golding of South Florida Aquatic Club in the 200 IM at 2:18.67 getting under the 2:18.69. Allison Kopas of Swim Fort Lauderdale was second at 2:21.35 and Carolyn Jungers of Schroeder YMCA was third at 2:21.74.

The Men’s 200 IM was a tight battle down to the wire with Sam Iida of Glenview Titan claiming the win at 2:06.04 overtaking Adam Kastigar of Aberdeen Swim Club at 2:06.53. Hudson Bursch of Michiana Stars was third at 2:08.31.

Swim Fort Lauderdale won the Women’s 400 medley relay with a 4:20.44 with Amanda Tipton, Caitlin Ahern, Elizabeth Zubero and Allison Kopas ahead of Miami Swimming South Florida Aquatic Club.

The final event of the meet went to Dynamo Swim Club overtaking Boilermaker Aquatics in the Men’s 400 medley relay. Boilermaker had won the first two men’s relays and Dynamo stole the last relay thanks to a swift 1:03 split from 14-year-old Liam Bell. Other members of the relay were Christopher Anderson, Christian Lorys and Alex Bemiller. They won it with a 3:53.20. Boilermaker was second at 3:54.17 and Indiana University Swim Team was third at 3:54.29.

The individual high point award went to Gabrielle Stecker of Unattached Illinois and Michael Dugan of Stingrays. The women’s team high point went to Columbia Swim Club and the men’s high point went to Boilermaker Aquatics. Boilermaker also won the overall team title.
