Billikens Blank Washington, 164-134 Women/196-88 Men

ST. LOUIS, October 1. BOTH men's and women's Saint Louis University swimming and diving squads picked up victories in the season-opening dual meet against Washington University on Saturday. The women topped the Bears 164-134 to extend their consecutive dual-meet winning streak to 36. The men's squad turned in a dominating 196-88 performance against the Bears.

The men opened the competition with a victory in the 200 medley relay. Kevin Parker, Tim Adams, Josh Stephens and Brad Byars all chipped in to turn in a time of 1:37.04. The Billikens then reeled off nine consecutive wins, including B.J. Brungardt in the 1000 free (10:32.53), Adam Trafton in the 200 free (1:46.53), Parker in the 100 back (53.47), Sal Cruz in the 100 breast (1:00.94), Scott Dewlen in the 200 fly (2:00.97), Byars in the 50 free (21.50), Kristopher Priemer in one-meter diving (132.00), Byars in the 100 free (46.63) and Parker in the 200 back.

After Wash. U. claimed the 200 breast (Julian Beattie/2:12.13) and 500 free (Brian Kushner/4:57.47), SLU got back on track by finishing one-two the 100 fly. Parker touched first with a time of 53.94, while freshman Dewlen completed his inspiring debut with a second-place touch in 54.88.

The men ended the competition on a high note by claiming the 200 free relay. Josh Stephens, Byars, Jimmy Ritt and Trafton combined to finish in 1:27.37 and vault the Billikens to the 196-88 victory.

The women's team took an entirely different route on their way to victory. Wash. U. claimed nine first-place finishes to SLU's seven, but the Billikens' depth and a rally down the stretch secured the win and kept thier winning streak intact.

Freshman Lindsey Tamkun was a bright spot for the Billikens. She nearly broke the school record in the 200 back after finishing in a time of 2:08.44, just one-tenth of a second off Megan Cappellupo's school-record mark. She also finished first in the 100 back in a time of 59.03, a time that ranks third on SLU's all-time top times list.

Sophomore Elena Ramirez, the reigning Atlantic 10 Conference champion in the 100 and 200 fly, posted wins in the 200 fly (2:04.50), 200 breast (2:24.78) and 200 IM (2:08.75). Freshman Anna Larson enjoyed a good day on the one-meter board, collecting 212.95 points to take first in the event.

The women's squad ended the competition by finishing first in the 200 free relay, which consisted of Briana Motley, Emily Oberjohn, Emily Stuifbergen and Jenny Lutzen.
