Big Ten Women’s Championships: Phoebe Bacon Surges to Top Seed in 200 IM

The 2024 Big Ten Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships continued on Thursday Feb. 22, from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., with the Day 2 prelims.

The Day 2 events are the 500 freestyle, 200 IM and 50 freestyle

Big Ten Women’s 500 Freestyle

Indiana’s Anna Peplowski cruised to an NCAA A cut in the 500 free to earn the top seed for tonight’s finals. The junior got to the wall in 4:37.63.

It was a big event for the Hoosiers as Ching Hwee Gan took the fifth spot (4:42), Ella Ristic was seventh (4:42.93) and Elyse Heiser was eighth (4:42.98) putting four in the finals for the Hoosiers.

Wisconsin junior Abby Carlson was the only other swimmer in the field to break 4:40 and got to the wall in 4:39.98 to take the second seed.

Michigan sophomore Katelyn Crom took the third spot in 4:40.77, followed by Northwestern grad student Ayla Spitz (4:42.17).

Big Ten Women’s 200 IM

Wisconsin senior Phoebe Bacon was about right on her seed time to grab the top seed in tonight’s final for the 200 IM. The Olympian in the 200 backstroke got to the wall in the IM in 1:55.28, about a second ahead of the field.

Ohio State took the next two spots with Josephine Panitz (1:56.34) and Paige Hall (1:56.85), while Michigan snuck in the final three spots.

Big Ten Women’s 50 Freestyle

Ohio State took three of the top four seed in the 50 freestyle in an event that looks to be huge in points for the Buckeyes as they chase another team title.

Junior Teresa Ivan claimed the top seed with a swim of 21.75, while senior Katherine Zenick was second in 21.86. Grad student Amy Fulmer was fourth in 22.01 behind Indiana’s Kristin Paegle (21.99).

Once again, the Wolverines put three in the bottom half of the top eight.
