Big Ten Announces Athlete of the Week Honors

The Big Ten Conference has announced its female and male swimmers and divers of the week.

Women’s Honors

Co-Swimmer of the Week
Kennedy Goss, Indiana

Jr. – Toronto, Ontario – Northern Secondary

  • Collected four top-five finishes against No. 11 Tennessee, including a pair of first-place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle (1:48.63) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:50.59)
  • The 2015-16 Academic All-Big Ten honoree recorded a second-place finish and NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 200-yard backstroke (1:57.63)
  • Contributed to a fourth-place mark in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:28.15)
  • Earns her first career Big Ten Swimmer of the Week award
  • Last Indiana Swimmer of the Week: Lilly King (Oct. 26, 2016)

 

Co-Swimmer of the Week
Emma Sougstad, Iowa

Sr. – Forest City, Iowa – Forest City

  • Tallied two of Iowa’s five individual victories against No. 16 Minnesota, including first-place finishes in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.33) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:01.87)
  • The two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree earned an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.33)
  • Contributed to second- and sixth-place marks in the 200-yard medley relay (1:42.46) and the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:37.75), respectively
  • Earns her fourth career Big Ten Swimmer of the Week award
  • Last Iowa Swimmer of the Week: Tereysa Lehnertz (Oct. 5, 2016)

 

Diver of the Week

Anna Filipcic, Nebraska

Sr. – Omaha, Nebraska – Omaha Burke High School

  • Swept the diving events with a score of 322.05 on the one-meter and 356.48 in the three-meter event en route to a victory over Northern Iowa
  • Set a new pool record with her one-meter dive score of 322.05
  • The two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree recorded NCAA Zone qualifying scores in both events
  • Earns her seventh career Diver of the Week honor
  • Last Nebraska Diver of the Week: Anna Filipcic (Oct. 12, 2016)

 

Freshman of the Week
Sarah Bacon, Minnesota

Indianapolis, Ind. – Cardinal Ritter

  • Earned a pair of first-place finishes to help the Golden Gophers defeat Iowa
  • Won the one-meter (317.85) and three-meter (377.10) diving events
  • Recorded NCAA Zone qualifying scores in both events
  • Earns her first Freshman of the Week award
  • Last Minnesota Freshman of the Week: Rachel Munson (Nov. 18, 2016)

Male Honors

Swimmer of the Week

Marat Amaltdinov, Purdue

Jr. – Orenburg, Russia – Moscow Olympic Reserve N3

  • Collected a trio of top-three finishes and posted a new pool-record time in the 200-yard breaststroke (1:58.28) at No. 16 Notre Dame’s Rolfs Aquatic Center
  • Earned first-place finishes in the 100-yard breaststroke (55.39) and the 200-yard breaststroke (1:58.28), and contributed to a second-place mark in the 200-yard medley relay (1:31.08)
  • The 2015-16 Academic All-Big Ten honoree recorded NCAA provisional qualifying times in both breaststroke events
  • Earns his fourth career Swimmer of the Week honor
  • Last Purdue Swimmer of the Week: Marat Amaltdinov (Jan. 27, 2016)

 

Diver of the Week
Steele Johnson, Purdue

So. – Carmel, Ind. – Laurel Springs

  • Swept the diving events in Purdue’s dual meet at No. 16 Notre Dame, scoring 408.55 in the one-meter event and 412.15 in the three-meter event
  • Victorious by 30 points on the one-meter and 14.5 on three-meter
  • Recorded NCAA Zone qualifying marks in both events
  • Earns his eighth Diver of the Week award
  • Last Purdue Diver of the Week: Steele Johnson (Oct. 26, 2016)

 

Freshman of the Week

Nick McDowell, Purdue

Las Vegas, Nev. – Durango

  • Earned a pair of victories in Purdue’s dual meet at No. 16 Notre Dame, improving on his season-best time in the 1,000-yard freestyle by 16 seconds and in the 500-yard freestyle by 3.5 seconds
  • Touched the wall first in the 500-yard freestyle (4:30.75) and the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:18.71)
  • Remains unbeaten in six individual events this season after sweeping the freestyle events at No. 16 Notre Dame
  • Earns his first career Freshman of the Week honor
  • Last Purdue Freshman of the Week: Joe Cifelli (Feb. 3, 2016)
