Big 12 Weekly Recap: Texas Tops TCU, Kansas Defeats Iowa State

This week around the Big 12 conference we saw the Texas Longhorns take on the Horned Frogs from Texas Christian University while Iowa State hosted Kansas University for a two-day dual. Both match-ups were senior day celebrations for the host teams.

Texas Women Finish Undefeated, Men Post Strong Marks

The men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams from University of Texas defeated Texas Christian University on their senior day celebration. The women’s meet ended in a score of 162-105, which marked the team’s first undefeated season in 30 years. The men’s meet ended with a Texas victory in a score of 159-108.

The Texas men completed the meet by winning all 15 events, starting with the 200 medley relay where the Longhorns posted a swift time of 1:28.81.

Texas would go on to sweep the 200 free with freshman JohnThomas Larson posting a 1:37.57 with his fellow freshman, Sam Pomajevich, who swam a 1:39.84, touched second. Junior Jeff Newkirk went on to win the 100 backstroke in 47.85 while his teammate Sam Kline took second in 48.80.

The Longhorn men continued to roll over TCU and unexpectedly so in the breaststroke events. Casey Melzer touched first in the 100 breast in a 54.30 while sophomore backstroke specialist Ryan Harty nabbed second in 55.36.

In the women’s meet, junior Joanna Evans took the win in the first individual event of the meet, the 200 free, in a time of 1:46.44.

Lady Longhorn Remedy Rule was apart of the winning 200 medley relay which opened the meet, which set her up for a second place finish in the 100 backstroke, behind teammate Kaitlin Harty who won the race in 55.00. Harty would go on to sweep the backstroke events by posting a 1:57.13 in the 200 back, which was good enough for win.

Freshman Victoria Edwards led the Longhorns to a 1-2 finish in the 200 fly with her swift time of 2:02.52 while her freshman classmate, Grace Ritch, took second in a time of 2:07.56.

 

Longhorn Junior Brooke Hansen led the ladies to a victory in the 200 breast with her time of 2:16.01, freshman up-and-comer Maxine Wolters touched second in 2:20.85.

The ladies didn’t let up into the distance freestyle events either with freshmen swimmers Logan Shiller and Peyton Quattlebuam producing a 1-2 finish in the 500 free.

Claire Adams notched a victory in the 100 fly with her swift time of 52.87 with her freshman teammate Emily Reese took second in a time of 54.42.

To finish the meet, Junior Quinn Carrozza nabbed a win in the 200 IM with a quick 2:02.31.

Kansas Narrowly Edges Iowa State

The Iowa State Cyclones hosted the Jayhawks from Kansas University for a two-day dual, ultimately falling to the Jayhawks with a score of 178.5-121.5.

The Cyclones only notched two wins against the Jayhawks across the whole meet, but their two wins were impressive. Senior Mary Kate Luddy was able to hold off the rest of the field in the 100 fly, which capped off her final meet at the Beyer Pool in Ames, Iowa. Luddy’s time was a swift 55.95, ahead of KU’s Haley Bishop who swam a 56.42 for second. Luddy also won the 200 fly on day one of the meet in a time of 2:02.76 ahead of the Jayhawk’s Ellie Flanagan who touched second in a time of 2:03.97.

Kansas was able to secure wins in both relays. In the 200 medley relay the team of Manon Manning, Haley Downey, Bishop and Lauryn Parrish put together a time of 1:45.00. In the 400 free relay Kansas notched yet another win with the assembly of Jenny Nusbaum, Bishop, Parrish and Carly Straight which produced a time of 3:28.60.

Other notable swims from the weekend came from Parrish in the 200 free where she swam to a win in a time of 1:51.92 while Manning took the 100 back in 56.72.
