Beata Nelson Throws Down 1:52 200 IM at NC State Invite

Wisconsin senior Beata Nelson threw down the nation’s fastest 200 IM on Thursday night at the NC State Invitational in Greensboro with a 1:52.27 as she won by three seconds over Julia Poole of NC State (1:55.33). Nelson is the defending NCAA champion in the 200 IM and second fastest all-time, but it doesn’t appear to be a cake walk this year for Nelson, who will have to deal with Virginia freshman Kate Douglass (1:52.84 at Tennessee Invite) this season. Nelson was a 1:50 las season but a 1:52 is not messing around.

Nelson also led off Wisconsin’s 400 medley relay team with a 50.36 which is easily the fastest 100 back this season. She was a 49.1 last season which stands as the American record. Beata Nelson was also not the only Wisconsin 200 IM winner as freshman Wes Jekel won the men’s race with a 1:46.81.

Nelson was the only individual A cut achieved on Thursday night as the NC State women won the 400 medley relay with an A Cut time of 3:31.40. The team of Katharine Berkoff (51.85), Sophie Hansson (58.38), Sirena Rowe (53.56) and Kylee Alons (47.61) won over Arizona State (3:33.88) and Wisconsin (3:34.44). The Wolfpack also won the men’s relay with Coleman Stewart (44.82), Rafal Kusto (53.44), Noah Hensley (45.89) and Nyls Korstanje (42.28) posting a 3:06.43 for the top time in the nation just ahead of Missouri (3:06.48) from last night.

The Arizona State men in won the 200 free relay with a 1:17.67 as the team of Carter Swift (19.86), Evan Carlson (19.13), Jack Dolan (19.23) and Ethan Luc (19.45) put up the second fastest time in the country. Fellow Sun Devil Cierra Runge won the 500 free with a 4:37.26 as she moved up to sixth in the country in that event.

The NC State men also got a pair of wins from Eric Knowles in the 500 (4:16.36) and Nyls Korstanje in the 50 free (19.11). Korstanje sits second in the NCAA.
