Australian Summer Swim Series: Unique Format Comes to Close

SYDNEY, Australia, January 30. LONG course competition came to an end at the Australian Summer Swim Series after a total of 68 races in which swimmers such as Geoff Huegill competed 12 times. Huegill finished the second day by winning the men's 50 fly knockout over Chris Wright, 26.00 to 26.64.

"This has been a fun, memorable meet and to race in such a historic pool has been a real privilege for us all," Huegill told Swimming Australia. "We've got six weeks now until we start to taper for Trials, so it's back to hard work and training for our squad tomorrow, but I'm looking forward to it."

Other 50 knockouts decided on Sunday were: James Magnussen in front of Matthew Abood, 24.63 to 24.83, in the men's 50 free, and Sally Foster beating Alice Mills, 26.89 to 27.48, in the women's 50 free. Ashley Delaney topped Daniel Arnamnart, 26.91 to 29.14, in the men's 50 back, while Emily Seebohm defeated Grace Loh, 29.98 to 30.84, in the women's 50 back.

Madeline Groves, 15, touched out Marieke Guehrer, 28.73 to 28.74, by the slimmest of margins in the women's 50 fly. Brenton Rickard followed with a 29.16 to 29.87 win over Christian Sprenger in the men's 50 breast, while Leiston Pickett upset Leisel Jones, 32.53 to 32.67, in the women's 50 breast.

More traditional individual events also took place.

Delaney claimed the men's 100 back in 56.45, while Seebohm topped the women's 50 back in 1:03.54. Thomas Fraser-Holmes snatched the men's 200 IM in 2:05.84, while Seebohm earned another title with a 2:18.01 in the women's 200 IM.

Wright hit the wall in 55.67 to win the men's 100 fly, while Stephanie Rice continued on the comeback trail after a shoulder surgery to win the women's 100 fly in 1:02.78. Blair Evans took home the women's 200 free crown in 2:01.46 with Kenrick Monk snaring the men's 200 free title in 1:52.66.

Rickard topped Sprenger again, this time with a 1:04.06 to 1:04.59 triumph in the men's 100 breast, while Jones put up a 1:09.91 to win the women's 100 breast. Kris Taylor snatched the men's 100 free crown in 51.10 over Magnussen (51.11), while Sally Foster won the women's 100 free in 56.68.
