Melanie Wright, a two-time Olympian for Australia, recently announced that she and husband Chris are expecting their first child in February.

After retiring from swimming last April when she missed out on the opportunity to make her third Olympic team Wright has transitioned well into life after swimming. The 30-year-old recently started medical school at Bond University and has plans to stick with it throughout her pregnancy and beyond.

Wright explained to The Gold Coast that “I think think it’s a natural progression, retiring and starting a family. It was a really tough decision to walk away from a sport I’d dedicated my life to but we’re so ready to take this next step.

While the two had made plans about starting a family post-retirement they did not expect it to happen so soon.

“We’d been talking about having a baby for the last couple of years but to be honest weren’t expecting to fall pregnant this soon (after retiring). But we’re very much ready for this special journey and can’t wait until February,” expressed Wright.

Melanie Wright, formerly Schlanger, was a member of both the 2008 and 2012 Australian Olympic teams and has five Olympic medals to her name: two gold (800 free relay in Beijing, 400 free relay in London), two silver (800 fee relay in London, 400 medley relay in London), and one bronze (400 free relay in Beijing). Chris, meanwhile, represented Australia in 2012 competing in the 100-meter and 200-meter fly.
