Aussie Selection Trials, Day 3, Heats: Queensland Young Gun Jamie Jack Upstages Cam McEvoy, Grabs Lane Four For Tonight’s 50m Freestyle Final

Emerging Queensland sprinter Jamie Jack has upstaged world record holder Cam McEvoy in the heats of the men’s 50m freestyle on day three of the Australian Trials and National Championships in Sydney.

McEvoy started proceedings in the opening heat, at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre, the four-time Olympian clocking 21.72 (well outside his WR of 20.88, set in China in March).

The 33-year-old Olympic gold medallist and two-time world champion switching off under the flags, cruising to the wall, ahead of 18-year-old NSW champion Ollie Moclair (Cranbrook) in 21.83.

Before 23-year-old Jack, the brother of Olympic and World Championship relay gold medallist Shayna, unleashed a 21.60 – his fastest ever race time -= to grab lane four in tonight’s much anticipated final – as he chases his a maiden Commonwealth Games berth.

Jack just outside his personal best of 21.43, set in a time trial at the 2025 US Summer Nationals in Irvine.

Jack and McEvoy were both under the automatic qualifying time for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and Pan Pacs of 21.77.

Meanwhile in the women’s 200m freestyle, Olympic champion Mollie O’Callaghan leads the all-star field into tonight’s final – all eight girls in the hunt for individual and relay places on the teams for Glasgow and Irvine.

O’Callaghan leading the St Peters Western all-stars in 1:52.28, followed by club mates Lani Pallister (1:56.37) and Milla Jansen (1:56.71) qualifying in second and third with another SPW girl Jenna Forrester seventh in a personal best of 1:57.95.

Forrester having already qualified for Glasgow in the 400m freestyle and 200IM.
