ASCA Lessons From Legends: Mike Parratto on Aerobic Training

As next year’s Olympic Games approach, one of the names that will be frequently mentioned on the road to Tokyo is that of American teenager Regan Smith. At the 2019 World Championships, Smith shattered the world records in the 100- and 200-meter backstroke events and set herself up to be a headliner at the Olympics. Of course, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Smith’s Tokyo dreams were delayed by a year.

With another year to train, Smith has worked diligently with her Riptide Swim Team coach, Mike Parratto. In addition to both backstroke events, Smith could contest the 100 butterfly and 200 butterfly on the Olympic stage. Once the pandemic hit, Smith deferred her freshman year at Stanford University to continue to train with Parratto in Minnesota.

Before molding Smith into an Olympic-medal contender, Parratto was a mentor to Hall of Famer Jenny Thompson. All Thompson did was capture 12 Olympic medals and establish herself as one of the greatest relay performers in history.

As the American Swim Coaches Association (ASCA) continues its Lessons From Legends series, Parratto took time to discuss aerobic training. Parratto’s commentary can be accessed by clicking here clicking on the video below.
