Arkansas vs. Tennessee

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee, October 16. IN the first regular season dual meet of the 2010-11 season, the Tennessee Lady Vol swimming and diving team overwhelmed visiting Arkansas by winning 13 of the 16 events, en route to a 171-129 win on Saturday afternoon at the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center.

"I thought we raced really well for the first meet and brought a lot of enthusiasm and aggressiveness," head swimming coach Matt Kredich said. "The thing I was most pleased with is that we won a lot of close races. This was a really good Arkansas team and the meet ended up coming down to those close races."

With the win, the Lady Vols open the season with a conference victory and remain a perfect 8-0 against the Razorbacks.

Sophomore Kelsey Floyd accounted for two individual wins; with NCAA B-cut times in the 100y fly (54.53) and 200y fly (1:59.27). Floyd was also a member of the winning 200y medley (1:43.22) and 400y free (1:34.37) relays.

Joining Floyd on the 200y MR was senior Martina Moravcikova, junior Jenny Connolly and redshirt sophomore Abbie Alton. The 400y FR had a strong freshman presence, as newcomers Alex Frasier, Mary Kate McNeilis and Lindsay Gendron were a part of the win.

In her collegiate dual debut, Gendron dominated the free events. The Bloomington, Ill., native nabbed the top spot in the 100y (50.89), 500y (4:50.09) and 1000y (9:54.37) free events. Her 1000y time ranks seventh on the all-time Lady Vol Top Performers list, while the 500y readout is good for 10th.

"Lindsay Gendron and Kelsey Floyd each had very good swims and today was a great place for them to start," Kredich said.

After a year of watching from the sidelines, redshirt freshman Tori Lamp swept the diving events.

On the 1-meter, the combination of Lamp and junior Gabrielle Trudeau finished one-two for the Lady Vols, as both had zone qualifying scores of 279.53 and 272.18, respectively. Lamp also had a zone qualifying score of 307.73 on the 3-meter to finish first.

"I knew we were going to have a really good challenge in Arkansas today and Tori Lamp is a strong competitor, but she hasn't competed in a while so I wasn't sure what to expect," said Tennessee diving coach Dave Parrington. "Tori showed me she hasn't' forgotten how to compete and that was great to see."

Moravcikova also notched a pair of victories as she finished first in the 100y breast with an NCAA B-cut time 1:02.59 and grabbed the top spot in 200y breast (2:18.59).

Also notching individual victories on the day were McNeilis and fellow freshman Lauren Solernou. McNeilis won the 200y back with a time of 2:01.56 and added a runner-up finish in the 50y free, while Solernou swam a victorious readout of 56.59 in the 100y back.

For Arkansas, Katie Whitbeck, Carly Mercer and Julia Kucherich all had wins. Whitbeck won the 200y free (1:49.30), Mercer grabbed the 50y free (23.52) and Kucherich had the victory in the 200y IM (2:05.93).

The Lady Vols have a quick turnaround as Louisville comes to Rocky Top on Thursday. The meet begins at 4 p.m. at the AJIAC. Tennessee will be looking for revenge against the Cardinals, who defeated UT, 152-148, in the season-opener a year ago.
