Arkansas Swimming Tops Nebraska in Dual Meet

Arkansas Swimming took down Nebraska on the road with a 174-125 victory in the women’s competition.

The swimming and diving team at the University of Arkansas defeated the University of Nebraska at the dual meet season opener in Lincoln, Nebraska at Devaney Natatorium. Arkansas 174, Nebraska 125.

The Razorbacks had stellar performances winning ten individual events on Saturday against Nebraska. The 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay, the Razorbacks placed took second place. There were nine second place finishes and ten third place finishes.

Senior Anna Mayfield placed first in both individual events of the day. In the 100 backstroke, Mayfield went a 56.00 and in the 200 backstroke she went a 2:00.55.

In the 200 backstroke, the Razorbacks took first, second, and third place. Mayfield (1), Chloe Hannam (2) with a time of 2:00.68, and Madison Umberger (3) with a time of 2:03.61.

Freshman Sydney Angell started her collegiate career winning the 200 breaststroke (2:20.84) and the 100 breaststroke (1:06.06). Freshman Annah Carney claimed second in the 200 freestyle (1:52.95) and third in the 500 freestyle (5:09.03)

Aiden Lister won both her individual events in the 1000 yard freestyle (10:21.13) and the 500 yard freestyle (5:04.06).

Sophomore Chloe Hannam took first place in the 200 freestyle (1:52.95) and first place in the 400 I.M. (4:21.68)

Senior Nina Drolc took second place in both her individual events. In 50 freestyle, Drolc had a time of 23.94 and in the 100 freestyle had a time of 51.85.

DIVING:

Senior Hannah Bortnick and sophomore Nicole Gillis both qualified for the NCAA Diving Zone Championships from March 7-9 in College Station, Tex. Gillis (295.35) placed second and Bortnick (286.80) placed third in the three-meter diving. In the one-meter, Gillis placed second (273.30) and Bortnick placed third (260.10).

Despite victories from Taryn Collura, Anna Filipcic and the 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relay teams, the Nebraska swimming and diving team dropped its non-conference battle with Arkansas on Saturday 174-125.

Nebraska started the meet off strong with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of Jacqueline Juffer, Jordan Ehly, Erin Oeltjen and Taryn Collura finished in first with a time of 1:44.53. The Huskers swept the relay events with the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Juffer, Alexandra Bilunas, Oeltjen and Collura racing to a first-place time of 1:35.38.

Collura led the Huskers today with victories in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyles. Collura captured the 50-yard title with a time of 23.35; teammate Bilunas finished behind Collura with a time of 23.95, good enough for third-place. Collura notched her second victory of the day in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 51.26.

Filipcic swept the diving events winning both the one- and three-meter dives. Filipcic captured the one-meter event with a score of 303.90 and finished with a score of 310.73 in the three-meter.

Nebraska had a strong showing in the 100-yard butterfly with Bria Deveaux finishing second in a time of 58.33 and Dana Posthuma finishing third with a time of 58.46.

Katt Sickle had a strong meet for the Huskers earning a second place finish and a pair of third place finishes against the Razorbacks. Sickle captured second in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:07.59 and secured third-place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:54.10 and the 400-yard individual medley posting a time of 4:32.30.

Three other Huskers earned second place finishes on Saturday. Kaylyn Flatt secured a second place finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle finishing in a time of 10:38.07. Juffer earned her second place finish in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 56.53, while Ehly notched a second-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke racing to a time of 2:21.30. Julia Roller earned a third-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly finishing in a time of 2:08.28.

Nebraska will be back in action Friday, Oct. 9, against Iowa State. That meet will begin at 5 p.m. and take place at the Devaney Natatorium. Following the Iowa State meet, Nebraska will be off for two weeks before the Alumni Meet scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 24.
