Arizona vs. Arizona State

TEMPE, Arizona, February 11. ARIZONA'S No. 1/9 Swimming and Diving teams ended their regular seasons on a high note as both the men's and women's teams defeated Arizona State on Saturday in Tempe, Ariz.

The men's team remained undefeated, completing a perfect dual season despite facing the country's toughest competition in No. 2 Texas, No. 3 Stanford, No. 5 USC, No. 6 California and No. 14 Iowa.

"This season, the men faced a lot of adversity," Arizona head coach Eric Hansen said. "Our season shows signs of depth and toughness and that bodes well for impending NCAAs."

In the meet, 14 different Wildcat swimmers in men's and women's competition won 21 out of 24 events and also ruled all four relays.

On the women's side, junior Lauren Smart (Charlotte, N.C.) posted an NCAA "A" cut time in the 100 back and also took a victory in the 100 fly.

Sophomore Margo Geer (Milford Center) won three events in the 200 free, 100 free and 50 free, senior Alyssa Anderson (Granite Bay) earned victories in the 200 fly and 200 IM, junior Chelsey Salli (Vancouver, B.C.) won the 100 breast and 200 breast and sophomore Sarah Denninghoff (Tucson, Ariz.) the 200 back.

On the men's side, senior Kevin Munsch (Kent, Wash.) posted two wins in the 100 breast and 200 breast and sophomore Giles Smith (Baltimore, Md.) matched it with wins in the 200 free and 100 fly.

Seven men also posted wins as sophomore Michael Sheppard (Eads, Tenn.) won the 100 back, sophomore Ellis Miller (Siloam Springs, Ark.) won the 200 fly, senior Adam Small (Tempe, Ariz.) won the 50 free, sophomore Mitchell Friedemann (Allenton, Wis.) won the 100 free, senior Nick Hadinger (Tucson, Ariz.) won the 200 back, senior Cory Chitwood (Union, Ky.) won the 500 free and senior Austen Thompson (Chandler, Ariz.) won the 200 IM.

In diving competition, sophomore Samantha Pickens (Murrysville, Pa.) and junior Ashley Herrera (La Palma, Calif.) earned second-place finishes on the 1m and the 3m, while senior Ben Grado (Conifer, Colo.) finished in second on the 3m.

"We definitely ended the dual meet season on a positive note," Hansen said. "We had a lot of people step up today and show that we are ready for the next part of our season."

Now that the dual season is over, the swimmers and divers now face championship season, which consists of Pac-12 Championships followed by NCAA Championships.

The women will precede the men, competing in a separate Pac-12 championship, beginning Wednesday, Feb. 22 and continuing through Saturday, Feb 25 in Seattle, Wash.

The men's Pac-12 Championships will begin Wednesday, Feb. 29 and continue through Saturday, March 3 in Long Beach, Calif.
