Arizona State vs. Utah

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, January 7. UTAH swimming & diving seniors stepped up today with impressive performances as they competed in their last meet of their careers at Ute Natatorium Saturday against Arizona State.
The Ute seniors were recognized preceding the meet and performed in front of the home crowd for the last time. The Utah men's team triumphed in a 165-135 win, while the Ute women fell short, 100-178.

"We had guys step up and do things that we haven't done before. We came together as a team and that's what I was really impressed with," said Utah head coach Greg Winslow. "It's all about getting to race against the best and we got to do that today and came away with a win."

Senior Hannah Caron took the win in the 100 fly (55.76) while touching in a time of 57.25 in the 100 back to finish in second place.

Taking on backstroke events, Sarah Cox finished in sixth (59.81) in the 100 and was third in the 200 (2:07.06). Cox also touched in a time of 2:12.99 in the 200 IM to take fifth.

Eric Murray won a close race in the 200 IM (1:57.76), touching in less than a second ahead of teammate Major Robinson (1:58.89). Eric Bonicelli completed the trio of seniors to compete in the event with a fourth-place finish (2:01.06).

Murray contributed more points to the Ute win as he placed fourth in the 200 free (1:43.92) and fifth in the 500 free (4:54.00).

With a time of 52.02, Robinson earned third place in the 100 back while also taking the runner-up spot in the 200 back (1:53.91). Bonicelli added another fourth place finish in the 500 free touching in 4:51.33.

Andy Choi rounds out the senior class with a sixth-place finish in the 200 breast (2:28.06).

"I know I'm going to miss it. Home meets are so fun and it gets so loud," said senior Eric Murray after the meet. "I'm glad we won. We couldn't have gone out any better."

Though the seniors were honored, the Utah underclassmen weren't quiet in the pool.

Nick Soedel won the 50 free and the 100 free for the second meet running with times of 20.65 and 45.91. Andy Lamb came in just behind Soedel and took second in the 100 (47.46).

Austin Fiascone contributed to the Utes win by taking the crown in the 100 back (51.17) and finishing fourth in the 200 back (1:59.34).

The top three spots in the 100 fly were awarded to the Utes. Led by Karson Applin (50.53), Winter Heaven took second (51.40) while Andy Lamb was third (51.99).

Freshman Graham Charlton touched in 1:54.24 in the 200 fly to earn his first collegiate win while Ryan Hansen won the 1000 free (9:44.27).

Another win for the Utes came from Applin in the 100 back (58.30). Ken Tiltges finished milliseconds after to place third (58.84) and Corey Williams touched in fifth (1:01.25).

Traycie Swartz pulled in two wins for the Utes in the 50 free (23.95) and the 100 free (51.50), winning by a mere .18 seconds in the 100.

Samantha Zuch came away with two runner-up spots. One in the 200 free (1:51.96) and the second in the 500 free (5:04.23).

Contributing points was Kayla Buck as she placed fourth in the 500 free (5:10.53) along with a third-place finish in the 1000 free (10:35.66).

In the 100 breast, Nicole Ligeza took the top spot for the Utes in finishing third (1:07.13) while Leighanne Oliver came in fifth (1:09.27).

Maddie Jamora assisted by taking fourth in the 50 free (24.61) while fifth places were awarded to Oliver in the 100 back (1:09.10) and Valerie McMullan in the 200 free (1:59.04).

Other notable Ute performances include Melissa Paakh's fourth-place finish in the 100 fly (58.35) and Alexandra Jamora's fifth-place finish in the 100 free (56.84).

In diving for the men, Brandon Stoppelmoor placed the highest for the Utes in the 1-meter by taking third (303.90). Nelson Foo and Caleb Herrick took the fourth and fifth spots (290.62 and 276.07). The 3-meter found Foo in the lead for the Utes in third place (289.35) as Stoppelmoor took fifth (264.15) and Herrick was sixth (248.10).

The meet ended with a bang as both Ute 400 free relay teams win close races. Zuch, Caron, McMullan and Swartz grab the win with a collective time of 3:26.29 while Lamb, Soedel, Tiltges and Applin won for the men (3:04.29).

The Ute women now head to Corvallis, Ore., where they will face Oregon State and USC next Saturday at 1 p.m. PT.
