Arizona Sprinters Lead Tri-Meet Win over Washington State, Northern Arizona

Arizona’s sprint contingent swept the top three spots in the 50 freestyle and guided the Wildcats to a pair of relay wins on Friday as Arizona topped Northern Arizona and Washington State in a double dual meet in Tucson.

Arizona scored wins of 180-20 over Northern Arizona and 185.5-108.5 over Washington State. The Lumberjacks bested Washington State, 178-116, at the University of Arizona’s Hillenbrand Aquatic Center.

The Wildcats asserted themselves mid-meet as the sprinters stepped up. Alyssa Schwengel went 23.72 to win the 50 freestyle, followed by teammates Riley Botton (23.81) and Grace Anderson (24.09). Schwengel also got her hand to the wall first in the 100 free.

Schwengel swam legs on both of Arizona’s winning relays, along with Julia Heimstead. They joined Botton and Tia Lindsay on the 400 free relay. Heimstead won the 200 free and 100 butterfly. Lindsay finished second in the 500 free and third in the 200 free.

Daisy Anderson won the 400 individual medley, finished second in the 200 fly and third in the 200 backstroke for Arizona. Paige Armstrong captured second place in both backstroke events.

Northern Arizona’s distance contingent keyed its victory over Wazzu. Casey Craffey started it with a win in the 1,000 free, her time of 10:18.81 launching a 1-2 finish with teammate Francesca Criscione. Maddy Rey won the 500 free, finished second in the 400 IM and grabbed third in the 200 fly. Gracie Munk swept the backstroke events, her winning margin in the 200 at nearly two seconds. Haley Mayhew finished third in both breaststroke swims.

Washington State dominated breaststroke courtesy of Emily Lundgren. She went 1:04.05 to edge Kennedy Fisher in the 100 breast, then won the 200 breast by nearly a second. Dori Hathazi won the 200 fly for the Cougars, and Angela Di Palo finished second in the 200 free and 100 free. Noelle Harvey was third in the 1,000 free and 500 free.
