Arizona, SMU vs. Texas

AUSTIN, Texas, January 29. NO. 4 Texas (5-1) maintained its convincing leads over No. 6 Arizona and SMU and won nine of 10 events to finish off a pair of two-day, double-dual meet victories over the Wildcats and Mustangs Saturday afternoon at UT's Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. Texas defeated Arizona by a 186.5-155.5 margin while handing SMU a 223-117 defeat.

"This was a good time to have a meet like this one," UT head coach Eddie Reese said. "The guys I needed to step up did so and did a real nice job. We're getting a better idea of where everybody is going into the conference and NCAA championships coming up."

Sophomore Michael McBroom started the afternoon with a victory in the 1,650-yard freestyle, where he posted a NCAA "B" cut of 15 minutes, 19.18 seconds. Senior Jim Robertson took third place in 15:40.40, and junior Jackson Wilcox placed fourth in 15:48.34. Texas followed with a win in the 200 medley relay with a NCAA "B" cut of 1:28.63. Sophomore Cole Cragin led off with a 22.36 backstroke split before junior Eric Friedland split 25.13 on the breaststroke. Junior Neil Caskey picked up the butterfly in 21.48 before junior Jimmy Feigen anchored in 19.66. Notably, freshman Madison Wenzler produced an impressive 22.49 lead-off split on UT's "D" relay.

UT completed a sweep of the diving events with a win in the platform event, which was not scored toward the team competition. Freshman Will Chandler picked up the win with 337.35 points, while freshman Will McCraney took third with 242.35 points. Texas' Feigen, better known for his proficiency in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle events, returned to lead a first-through-fourth Texas finish in the 200 freestyle, as he was victorious with a NCAA "B" cut of 1:36.82. Freshman Miles Joye nearly topped Feigen but settled for second in 1:36.86, while senior Scott Jostes took third in 1:38.01.

UT's Cragin knocked off Arizona All-American Cory Chitwood in the 100 backstroke and claimed the victory in 48.18. Texas freshman Patrick Murphy took third place in 48.85. Sophomore Nick D'Innocenzo continued an already-solid meet with a win in the 100 breaststroke, where he posted a NCAA "B" cut of 55.01. Friedland took fourth in 55.54. Texas' Caskey added a win in the 200 butterfly with a top time of 1:48.85 before Feigen tacked on another victory with a win in the 50 freestyle in 19.98.

D'Innocenzo notched yet another victory, this time in the 200 individual medley where he posted a NCAA "B" cut of 1:47.31. UT's Joye chipped in another solid swim with a close second behind D'Innocenzo in 1:47.50. Texas finished off the afternoon with a second-place showing in the 400 freestyle relay, where Jostes, Dax Hill, junior Kyle McNeilis and Feigen finished in 2:58.54.

Texas resumes its dual-meet season on Friday, Feb. 4 when it hosts Texas A&M on Senior Day as part of the State Farm Lone Star Showdown. The meet is set for a 6 p.m. start at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.

No. 6 Texas (5-2) maintained its lead from session one and won nine of 10 events in the second session to finish off a 189-156 victory over No. 7 Arizona Saturday afternoon at UT's Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.

Junior Leah Gingrich started the afternoon with a win in the 1,650-yard freestyle, where she won by over seven seconds with a mark of 16:52.25. Arizona narrowly out-touched Texas by seven one-hundredths of a second in the 200 medley relay, though UT posted a NCAA "B" cut of 1:41.07. Freshman Lily Moldenhauer led off in 25.75 before sophomore Laura Sogar split 28.32 on the breaststroke leg. Sophomore Kelsey Amundsen split 24.62 on the butterfly before sophomore Bethany Adams anchored in 22.38.

Junior Karlee Bispo put another event in the win column for Texas when she captured the 200 freestyle with a NCAA "B" cut of 1:47.92. Junior Katie Riefenstahl added a fourth-place time of 1:49.63. Moldenhauer maintained Texas' momentum in the 100 backstroke, where she was victorious with a NCAA "B" cut of 54.51. Sophomore Jessica Guro took third in 55.80. Sogar notched another Longhorns victory in the 100 breaststroke with a NCAA "B" cut of 1:01.11. Adams posted a third-place time of 1:03.19.

Sophomore Maren Taylor maintained Texas' winning ways with a win in the platform event, which was not scored toward the team competition. Taylor was victorious with 286.40 points. Gingrich notched her second win of the afternoon, as she claimed the 200 butterfly with a NCAA "B" cut of 1:59.72. Freshman Ellen Lobb took second in 2:01.64. UT elected to exhibition its remaining events, though the Longhorns continued to pile up victories.

Bispo registered another victory, this time in the 50 freestyle with a top time of 22.95, good for another NCAA "B" cut. Amundsen placed third in 23.37. Bispo went back-to-back for her third win of the day, as she clocked 2:00.73 – another NCAA "B" cut – to win the 200 individual medley. Gingrich took second place in 2:02.72.

Texas capped the afternoon with a convincing victory in the 400 freestyle relay with a NCAA "B" cut of 3:20.91. Adams led off in 50.97 before Amundsen split 49.88 on leg two. Gingrich picked up the third leg in 50.37 before Bispo put a stamp on an outstanding afternoon with a 49.69 anchor leg.

Texas resumes competition on Saturday, Feb. 5 when it hosts SMU on Senior Day at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
