17-year-old Ariarne Titmus broke the Australian record in the 400 freestyle on Monday night at the Queensland State Championships in Brisbane. Titmus swam a 4:02.86 in the 400 free to break the two-year-old Australian record that was held by Jess Ashwood of 4:03.34 on her way to winning bronze at the 2015 Worlds in the event.

Titmus’ time now ranks her fourth in the world for the 2017 calendar year behind the three medalists in the event at the Budapest World Championships. Titmus was fourth in the Budapest final with a 4:04.26 earlier in the year.

Titmus won the final ahead of former record holder Ashwood by nearly seven seconds as Ashwood was second at 4:09.65 and Mikkayla Sheridan was third at 4:10.22.
