Anu Nihipali Breaks Vermont Pool Record as Wagner Swimming Downs Catamounts

BURLINGTON, Vermont, October 11. Wagner Swimming stepped up to win a second meet this season, downing Vermont 161-139.

The Wagner Women’s Swimming & Diving team won their second match of the season when they faced the University of Vermont today by a 161-139 count.

Sophomore Anu Nihipali (Honolulu, HI / Hawaii Preparatory Academy) finished first in three separate events this afternoon. She won the 100 and 200 Backstroke by posting times of 56.14 and 2:05.98 in that order. With her time in the 100 Backstroke, Nihipali broke the University of Vermont’s pool record. She also helped the team by winning the 200 IM with a time off 2:11.30.

Junior Amanda Lucia (Easthampton, MA / Easthampton) won the 1000 Freestyle and the 200 Butterfly for the second day in a row when she posted times of 10:37.14 and 2:06.75 respectively. Lucia contributed a third win on the day when she finished the 500 Freestyle in a time of 5:12.68.

Freshman Maggie Slocomb won the 200 breaststroke for the second straight day and did so by posting a time of 2:25.47.

Junior Erica Curry (Fountain Valley, CA / Fountain Valley), freshmen Sam Lavrich (Audubon, PA / Methacton), and senior Mallory Lee (Newark, CA / Moreau Catholic) finished 1st, 2nd, and 3rd respectively in the 1-Meter dive.

The Green & White return to the pool on Saturday, October 25 when they head to New York, NY to face Iona, Saint Francis Brooklyn, and Sacred Heart in a meet that begins at 11:30 am.

The Vermont swimming and diving team won eight events, but fell to Wagner by a score of 161-139 in the Catamounts’ season-opening meet Saturday at Forbush Natatorium.

The Catamounts opened the meet with a come-from-behind victory in the 200 medley relay. Claire Rutscher, Shannon Cowley, Courtney Gray and Christa Weaver combined to swim the 200 in 1:47.21 to take first place. Weaver made up ground on the final leg to lead UVM to the win.

Vermont also won the final event of the meet, which was the 200 free relay. Andie Blaser, Sarah Mantz, Gray and Weaver finished the relay in 1:37.50 to post a first-place showing.

Weaver also collected two individual victories on the afternoon in both the 50 (24.15) and 100 (52.72) freestyle events, while Mantz registered a first-place time of 1:55.58 in the 200 free. In the 50 free, Blaser (24.85) and Gray (24.97) notched second and third-place showings, as the Catamounts swept the top three spots in the event.

Freshman Shannon Cowley collected a victory in the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:06.05 in her first collegiate meet, and Gray rounded out the UVM victories in the swimming events with a first-place finish in the 100 fly (58.03).

In the diving competition, junior Maggie Preston posted Vermont’s top score of the day. Preston took first place in the 3-meter dive with a score of 214.30.

With the win, Wagner moves to 2-0 on the year, while Vermont falls to 0-1.

UVM returns to action next Saturday (Oct. 18) for a home meet with New Hampshire at 11 a.m. in Burlington. Live video will be streamed for free via CatamounTV.com.
