Anna Moesch Swims Sub-22 in 50 Free at YMCA Nationals; Thomas Heilman Grabs Third Win

Anna Moesch Swims Sub-22 in 50 Free at YMCA Nationals; Thomas Heilman Grabs Third Win

At the YMCA National Championships in Greensboro, N.C., 16-year-old Anna Moesch of Greater Somerset County won her second freestyle event of the season in impressive fashion. During Thursday night’s finals, Moesch swam an impressive time of 21.97 for the win in the women’s 50 freestyle, which allowed her to win the event by a half-second.

Previously, Moesch won the 200 free in 1:44.10, and she had recorded splits of 21.46 (for the 50 free) and 47.02 (100 free) anchoring a pair of Greater Somerset County’s medley relays, and earlier in the night, Moesch had earned a third-place finish in the 200 IM in 1:59.34. She will be heavily favored in Friday’s 100 free to conclude the meet. In this 50 free, Moesch was followed by Upper Main Line’s Alexa Fulton (22.47) and Farmington Valley’s Mackenzie Headley (22.52).

The men’s 50 free saw Piedmont’s Thomas Heilman claim first place in 19.86, making him the only swimmer to break 20. Heilman had already grabbed wins in the 100 butterfly and 400 IM in Greensboro. In the splash-and-dash, he was followed by Lynchburg’s Brendan Whitfield (20.11) and Cumberland’s Daniel Diehl (20.16).

Moesch’s Greater Somerset County teammates swept the women’s events contested during the session. Catherine Meisner took first place in the 500 free in 4:49.68, while Springfield’s Kayleigh Lovell (4:50.77) and Kanawha’s Madi McGlothen (4:50.83) placed second and third, respectively. Emily Thompson won the 200 IM in 1:57.67, with Champaign’s Angie Coe finishing second (1:58.97).

After the impressive evening for the Greater Somerset County women, it was no surprise to see the team of Meisner, Caitlyn Hughes, Thompson and Moesch take the victory in the 800 free relay. Moesch was racing for the third time in the evening session, but she still managed a solid 1:46.67 on the anchor leg.

In an exciting finish, ME Lyons’ Alex Craft edged out Upper Main Line’s Kevin Cary (4:27.16) and Champaign’s Nolan Miller (4:27.18) to win the men’s 500 free. Miller actually led with 50 yards to go before Craft and Cary made surges down the stretch. Countryside’s Kevin Glennon comfortably won the 200 IM in 1:47.42, with Champaign’s Jake Regenwetter (1:49.45) and Lakeland Hills’ James Curreri (1:49.70) going 2-3.

To end the night, Heilman led off the 800 free relay for the Piedmont men in 1:36.77, and he was followed by Will Browne, David King and older brother Matthew Heilman on the way to a 6:38.19 victory.
