Andrew Lauterstein Breaks Commonwealth Record

MILAN, Italy, July 3. ANDREW Lauterstein has finalized race preparations for the World Championships in Rome by breaking the Commonwealth and Australian record for the 100m butterfly at the Giorgio Armani Swim Meet in Milan overnight.

The 22-year-old shaved 0.2 seconds off his previous best over the distance (51.12), breaking the 51 second barrier for the first time and setting a new record of 50.92.

Swimming Australia Head Coach Alan Thompson says Lauterstein has been in very good form over the last month, and this swim shows that he is in a strong position to swim well in Rome.

"Andrew was very consistent during the Mare Nostrum series last month and then backed that up at the Paris Open where he won both the 50m and 100m butterfly in world class times," said Thompson.

"It's no surprise to see that he has continued on with that form in Italy, and his next challenge will be to take that form in to a successful meet at the World Championships later this month."

Lauterstein will swim both the men's 50m and 100m butterfly at the FINA World Championships in Rome and will now stay in Europe with the rest of the NSWIS squad before joining up with the Telstra Australian Dolphins in Manchester on July 15.
