America East: Day Two

BOSTON, Massachusetts, February 26. THE Boston University women and the UMBC men take over the lead after day two of the 2010 Swimming and Diving Championship.

Trailing the Terriers, who've claimed 288 points, is the University of New Hampshire (239 points) in second. UMBC (226) and University of Vermont (160) are third and fourth, respectively, followed by Binghamton University (139.5), Stony Brook University (115.5) and University of Maine (94).

Placing second behind the Retrievers (292 points) on the men's side is Boston U. with 277 points. Binghamton (252), Stony Brook (153) and Maine (71) rank third, fourth and fifth, respectively, heading into day three of the championship meet.

Sophomore Amanda Schmitz (Pleasanton, Calif./Foothill) claimed the Terrier women's first title of the meet, winning the 500 free in 4:53.05. In the men's 500 free, the Bearcats also picked up their first title when freshman David Gleason (New York, N.Y./Robert Louis Stevenson) touched first in 4:31.14.

Wildcat junior Amy Perrault (Kirkland Lake, Ontario/Ecole Catholique) captured her first individual title of the meet after claiming two relay victories yesterday. Perrault led a New Hampshire 1-2 sweep of the 200 IM with a time of 2:02.71. UMBC senior Matt Mattingly (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) touched first in the men's 200 IM in 1:48.69 just .02 seconds off an America East record.

Boston U. junior Maria McIntyre (Herndon, Va./Chantilly) broke the first America East record of the day, winning the 50 free in 23.17 while fellow Terrier sophomore Jackson Hill (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) claimed the men's 50 free in 20.73.

Freshman Melinda Matyas (Budapest, Hungary/Eotvos Jozsef Gimnazium) remained dominate on the boards this season, leading a Terrier sweep of the three-meter dive. Matyas placed first with a score 563.45 while juniors Sarah Colton (Wheatfield, N.Y./Niagara Wheatfield) and Bailey O'Brien (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) placed second and third with scores of 515.15 and 443.05, respectively.

The Terriers wrapped up day two of the championship with a sweep of the 200 free relays. The women's squad set a new pool and conference record of 1:32.56.
