Alexandrov, Smit Named Swimming World Magazine College Swimmers of the Week

PHOENIX, Arizona, February 22. A pair of Division I swimmers, Northwestern University senior Mike Alexandrov and Stanford University freshman Julia Smit, were named Swimming World Magazine's College Swimmers of the Week today.

The award is an extension of the National Collegiate Swimmer of the Week honors given out by CollegeSwimming.com across three divisions of NCAA competition. While Alexandrov and Smit swept the Division I awards, Emily Greenwood of Truman State and Matt Hug of Missouri-Rolla garnered the Division II honors. Brittany Sasser of Amherst and Nelson Westby of St. Olaf's both earned Division III accolades.

Alexandrov earned Big Ten Swimmer of the Championships after winning conference titles in all three of his individual events and with three different relays. In winning those events, he set five pool, school and Big Ten conference records, with the only victory not coming in that fashion being in the 200 IM. His record-setting performances came in the 100 breaststroke ('A' cut of 52.24), 200 breaststroke ('A' cut of 1:52.93), the 200 freestyle relay ('A' cut of 1:17.21, Alexandrov split a 19.30), the 400 medley relay ('A' cut of 3:06.99, Alexandrov breaststroke split of 51.90) and the 200 medley relay ('A' cut of 1:25.14, Alexandrov breaststroke split of 23.75). His winning 200 IM time was a pool-record 'A' cut (1:45.11).

Smit helped Stanford to a second-place finish at the 2007 Pac-10 Championships. She started off by winning the 200 IM (1:55.38) in record-breaking fashion as she downed Summer Sanders' 15-year-old school record in the event. Stanford's 200 freestyle relay team, including Smit, then set a school record (1:29.48) behind a winning Arizona squad. Smit also highlighted Stanford's performances with a Pac-10 meet-record time to win the 400 IM (4:04.02) in the first event of the finals session on day two. Smit's time also was her personal best and the top mark in the nation in the event this season. On the final day Smit turned in the winning time in the 200 backstroke (1:54.88).
