Akram Mahmoud Breaks 15:00 in Mile at Georgia Tech Invite
On the final night of the Georgia Tech Invite, South Carolina’s Akram Mahmoud was impressive in the men’s 1650 free, while the Auburn women and Florida State men wrapped up team titles.
Auburn’s women scored 1140.5 points to easily beat runner-up Alabama (1054). Florida State was third at 958.5. On the men’s side, Florida State scored 1569.5 points to crush Alabama (1174.5) and Georgia Tech (890).
Alabama’s Mia Nonnenberg finished with the win in the women’s 1650 free at 16:23.62, followed by teammate Alexis Preski in 16:27.89. Georgia Tech’s Emily Ilgenfritz came in third at 16:40.72.
In the men’s mile, Mahmoud put up a time of 14:57.88, making him the fourth-fastest performer in the country this season, behind Louisville’s Marcelo Acosta and the Florida duo of Ben Lawless and Blake Manganiello. Mahmoud’s Gamecock teammate Cody Bekemeyer came in with another competitive time of 15:03.82, and Alabama’s Daniel Kober grabbed third in 15:23.76.
Florida State freshman Madeline Cohen pulled away from Auburn’s Erin Faulconer to win the women’s 200 back. Cohen touched in 1:53.51, while Faulconer was second in 1:54.44 and Georgia Tech’s Carrie Lee came in third at 1:56.42.
Alabama’s Christopher Reid held off Florida State’s Connor Kalisz in the men’s 200 back, 1:41.74 to 1:42.15. Georgia Tech’s Rodrigo Correia was third at 1:43.00.
Alyssa Tetzloff picked up another win in the women’s 100 free, but she had to work hard to hold off teammate Julie Meynan, 48.01 to 48.04. Close behind was Georgia Tech’s Iris Wang in 48.23.
Alabama’s Robert Howard became the first man in the country to break 42 seconds in the men’s 100 free this season when he posted a time of 41.99 to win comfortably over teammate Zane Waddell (42.68). Florida State’s Emir Muratovic took third in 43.11.
Alabama’s Justine McFarlane won the women’s 200 breast in 2:09.58, taking down 100 breast winner Natalie Pierce of Florida State. Pierce came in at 2:10.31, and Eastern Carolina’s Vendela Norrman touched third in 2:11.72.
The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets finished 1-2 in the men’s 200 breast. Freshman Caio Pumputis won in 1:53.88, and Moises Loschi touched second in 1:54.48. South Carolina’s Nils Wich-Glasen came in third at 1:55.84.
Auburn’s Bailey Nero got the win in the women’s 200 fly in 1:57.92, followed by Georgia Tech’s Laura Branton (1:58.76) and Auburn’s Jaden Bellina (1:59.39).
South Carolina’s Fynn Minuth was the top man in the men’s 200 fly, touching in 1:43.56. Georgia Tech’s Christian Ferraro touched second in 1:44.48, about a half-second ahead of teammate Tim Slanschek (1:44.89).
Georgia Tech’s Cami Hidalgo picked up another win in diving, scoring 270.05 on the platform. The Auburn duo of Allison Maillard (252.95) and Erin Norton (252.30) rounded out the top three.
Auburn’s Scott Lazeroff took first on the platform for the men, finishing with 397.70 points, while FSU’s Aidan Faminoff (374.85) and GT’s Matt Casillas (367.70) rounded out the top three.
Auburn won the final women’s event of the meet, the 400 free relay, with Meynan, Faulconer, Ashton Ellzey and Tetzloff touching in 3:13.88. Albama finished second in 3:15.39 with Flora Molnar, Temarie Tomley, Leonie Kullman and Bailey Scott. Florida State’s Emma Terebo, Leila Johnston, Tayla Lovemore and Lexi Smith finished third in 3:17.67.
To close out the meet, Alabama’s Bams, Waddell, Reid and Howard won the men’s 400 free relay in 2:50.46. Florida State was not far behind, with Will Pisani, Joseph Plechy, Kanoa Kaleoaloha and Muratovic combining to swim a time of 2:51.27, and Georgia Tech’s Correia, Franco Reyes, Pumputis and Noah Harasz took third in 2:54.83.
