After Wins over Georgia Tech, Florida State Sweeps ACC Weekly Honors

Florida State had four of its swimmers recognized as swimmer of the week in the ACC Weekly Honors, which released its fifth weekly installment on Tuesday.

Peter Varjasi was named the men’s swimmer of the week. Teammate Julia Mansson shared the women’s swimmer of the week honor with Virginia Tech’s Emma Atkinson.

The female divers also shared the honor, between Florida State’s Samantha Vear and Izzi Mroz of Va. Tech. FSU’s Darwin Nolasco was the men’s diver of the week.

Varjasi set three pool records, part of the Seminoles’ seven on the day, at Morcom Aquatic Center in blitzing Georgia Tech. The senior from Germany set a best time of 42.83 in the 100 freestyle, the seventh-fastest time in the nation this season. He also helped set records on the Seminoles’ 200 medley and 400 free relays. Varjasi is the first swimmer, man or woman, to repeat as swimmer of the week in 2022.

Mansson, a senior from Sweden, set a pool record in the 200 breaststroke of 2:09.68 that landed just a second over the school record. She also won the 100 breast and swam on the winning 200 medley relay.

Atkinson won the 200 breaststroke in 1:54.67 at a two-day invitational at Ohio State. It’s the third-fastest time in the nation this season. The junior also won the 100 backstroke in 53.89 and split 53.83 to help the Hokies’ 400 medley relay to a runner-up result.

Nolasco won the 1-meter event against Georgia Tech with a score of 315.83. The junior from Mexico was second in the 3-meter event.

Vear swept her diving events against the Yellow Jackets. She scored 278.48 on 1-meter and was the only diver to top 300 points one 3-meter with a score of 329.40.

Mroz, a junior from Denver, won both diving events in Columbus. She scored 318.00 points to prevail on 1-meter, then added a 299.62 to take top honors on 3-meter. It’s her second co-diver of the week honor this year.
