Adriana Palomino, Yoelvis Pedraza Win 1000 Free Titles at Austin Sectionals

AUSTIN – Arizona Gold’s Adriana Palomino and RallySport’s Yoelvis Pedraza took home titles in the women’s and men’s 1000 free as the first night of racing kicked off at the Austin Sectionals meet at the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center.

Palomino picked up the first win of the day, dropping eight seconds to win the 1000 free in 9:50.80. RallySport Aquatic Club’s Christine Jennings finished less than half a second behind in 9:51.24, while Flatiron Athletic Club’s Eleanor Matheson rounded out the top three with a 9:56.59.

Meanwhile, Pedraza cruised to victory in the men’s 1000 free, posting a solid 9:01.67 to finish just over three seconds in front of Arizona Gold’s Antonio Ramirez (9:05.01). TJCC Stingrays’ Brooks Fail clocked a 9:06.14 to place third.

Tualatin Hills dominated the women’s 800 free relay, as the foursome of Keaton Blovad, Ryan Falk, Lisa Kaunitz and Sara Metzsch stopped the clock at 7:17.77 for a seven-second victory. Denver Swim Academy’s Morgan Rosas, Samantha Smith, Lindsay Painton and Ann Ochitwa moved up two spots from their fourth place seed, finishing second in 7:24.80. Jocelyn Wang, Samantha Fazio, Shae Nicolaisen and Victoria Toris gave Scottsdale Aquatic Club a third place showing with their 7:24.94.

Arizona Gold topped the men’s 800 free relay in 6:38.78, thanks to strong swims from Mark Jurek, Brent Creager, Antonio Ramirez and Ben Olszewski. Tualatin Hills’ Liam Metzsch, Anthony Nosack, Sean Calkins and Patrick Mulcare separated themselves for second with a 6:42.05. RallySport’s Mick Bartholomew, Tyler Lis, PJ Stapleton and Chris Nicholson rounded out the top three finishers in 6:49.45.

Arizona Gold leads the men’s team standings after day one with 85 points, with Scottsdale Aquatic Club (75 points) and RallySport (56 points) in second and third. Scottsdale is in first in the women’s meet with 84 points, followed by Tualatin Hills (75 points) and Boulder Swimming (56 points).
