Adams State Duals

ALAMOSA, Colorado, October 2. THE Adams State swimming teams kicked off their 2010-11 season Saturday at the Plachy Hall Pool where the Grizzly women set six new school records while hosting Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference members Mesa State and Colorado Mines for the Adams State Duals.

In the three-way dual, teams were scored head-to-head while all three swam at the same time. The Grizzlies fell in both duals, falling 229-122 against Mesa State and 191-143 when scored against Colorado Mines. In the dual between the Mavericks and Orediggers, Mesa State pulled out a 221-135 victory. The three teams combined to set new record Plachy Hall Pool records in 13 of the 17 events contested.

Adams State faced off against Mesa State five times last year, and Saturday's match-up was the second closest final score between the two teams, while their deficit against Mines was the closest in four total meetings.

Freshman Jennell Higgs (Socorro, N.M.) led the Grizzlies, capturing the only event win of the day for ASC.
Higgs clocked a time of 2 minutes, 21.20 seconds in the 200 yard butterfly, and in addition to winning the event smashed the previous school record by nearly six full seconds.

Higgs smashed another Grizzly record later in the day, touching the wall in 5:12.24 in the 400 individual medley (IM), a near nine second improvement over the previous mark, good for a third-place finish in the event. Her day also included swimming the second leg of the 200 medley relay along with teammates Kelly Erickson (Federal Way, Wash.), Sammi Kao (Los Alamos, N.M.) and Amanda Angelovich (Longmont, Colo.) that came in under the previous Adams State record in a time of 2:01.34.

Angelovich set the new ASC standard in the 50 free with a time 27.27 seconds, only 19/100ths under the mark set by sophomore teammate Madison Hill (Tucson, Ariz.), the only returning member of last year's team. Hill, Angelovich, Kao and Erickson later teamed up for a new ASC record in the 200 free relay, improving on the old mark by five seconds with a time of 1:49.30.

With no previous record in the event, freshman Mary Giza (Las Vegas, Nev.) set the Grizzly standard in the 1,000 free event, completing the 40 lengths of the pool in 12:15.87.

Freshman Rachel Beranek (Lincoln, Neb.) recorded a trio of top 10 finishes, taking sixth in the 200 back in 2:32.37, and seventh in both the 200 free and 200 IM, clocking times of 2:13.81 and 2:35.48, respectively.

Freshman Jennie Thorson (Colorado Springs, Colo.) recorded a sixth-place finish in the 100 back in 1:10.54, and was eighth in the 200 back in 2:37.52. And Redshirt freshman Talisha Bell (Manitou Springs, Colo.) swam to an eighth place showing in the 50 free with a time of 35.17.

For the first time in four decades men's swimming came to Adams State College as the newly resurrected squad hosted fellow Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference members Mesa State and Colorado Mines for a three-way dual meet to open the 2010-11 season.

In Saturday's meet, the lone home event of the year for the Grizzlies, teams were scored head-to-head but swam against both teams at the same time. Mesa State topped ASC 283-83, and Colorado Mines scored a 270-67 victory against the Grizzlies. The Mavericks also scored a victory in their dual with the Orediggers by a tally of 216-157.

ASC's top individual finishes on the day came by freshman Taylor Rousell (Port Orchard, Wash.) and redshirt freshman Cody Robson (Athens, Texas), as each tallied a fifth-place finish. Rousell clocked a time of 23.70 seconds in the 50 yard freestyle for an ASC men's modern era record and was first non-Mesa State swimmer to the wall, while Robson finished in 2:31.51 in the 200 breast. Robson also managed a sixth-place finish in the 100 breast with a time of 1:07.90 and was 10th in the 50 free in 24.21, good for an ASC men's modern era record.

Rousell's day also includes top-10 showings in the 200 free, where he was ninth with a time of 1:58.43 and the 100 fly in which he was seventh in 59.79.

Freshman Max Berumen (Lafayette, Ind.) took a pair of eighth-place finishes in the 100 breast and 200 individual medley (IM), in times of 1:12.79 and 2:19.90, respectively, the latter setting the ASC men's modern era record.

In the 100 back, freshman Jared Machado (Castle Rock, Colo.) raced to his best finish of the with a seventh-place showing in 1:09.49, where he was followed closely by teammate Jacob Clapp (Fountain, Colo.) who clocked 1:11.93 for eighth place. Freshman Vianny Guevera (Tyler, Texas), raced unattached but competed in the 100 back, 50 free and 100 fly.

The Grizzlies will be in action again next Friday and Saturday when they'll travel to Grand Junction for the Intermountain Shootout hosted by Mesa State, which will be scored similarly to the Adams State Duals. The Grizzlies will compete against Mesa State, the University of Utah and the Air Force Academy on both days, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday.
