Adam Peaty Surges To Top Of World Rankings In 100 Breaststroke

Day one of the 2016 British National Championships has commenced with Adam Peaty jumping to the top of the world rankings in the 100 breaststroke.

Kickstarting the meet was the men’s 400-meter free where James Guy of jumped to first with a time of 3:48.74. Not to be left behind, though, was Stephen Milne of who finished with a time of 3:48.81. Timothy Shuttleworth rounded out the top three with a 3:49.11. With the qualifying standard sitting at a 3:44.81 the men will have to pick up the pace a bit to dip below.

Guy’s splits: 26.34, 28.19, 28.69, 28.67, 28.88, 28.97, 29.39, 29.61–3:48.74

Milne’s splits: 26.47, 28.48, 28.72, 28.99, 28.91, 29.36, 29.24, 28.64–3:48.81

The young Georgia Coates delivered the top time in the women’s 200-meter free, stopping the clock at a 1:59.09. A trio of 1:59’s followed her to the wall led by Jazmin Carlin and her time of 1:59.33. Eleanor Faulkner (1:59.44) and Camilla Hattersley (1:59.97) return tonight as the third- and fourth-place seeds respectively.

Adam Peaty surged ahead of the competition in his signature stroke, grabbing the first-place seed in the men’s 100-meter breaststroke with a 58.74. That time sits as the current fastest time in the world rankings for 2016 and the only sub-59-second mark.

Ross Murdoch touched with the second fastest time of the morning with a 59.82. Murdoch’s time moves him up a few notches to seventh in the world rankings. Craig Benson rounded out the top three with a time of 1:00.20. While Peaty was the only swimmer to dip below the qualifying time of 59.38, Murdoch sits on the threshold.

The women’s 400-meter IM field was led by Hannah Miley who stopped the clock at a 4:38.48 for the first-place seed. Miley’s time moves her to fifteenth in the world rankings for 2016 and sits only a shy three seconds off the qualifying standard of 4:35.46.

Aimee Wilmott finished second in prelims of the 400 IM with a time of 4:42.32, while Coates grabbed third with a 4:46.28 after a short turnaround from the 200 free.
