Adam Barrett Leads Two Events in Day One Prelims of Moscow World Cup

World Cup swimming started again this morning in Moscow. This third stop will close out the first cluster.

Russia’s Daria Ustinova touched first in prelims of the women’s 200 freestyle in 1:57.61, well ahead of the second fastest morning swimmer Irina Prikhodko in 1:58.49.

Alia Atkinson was absent from the 100 breaststroke after having won the event in the first two stops, and tying the world record. That left the door open for Japan’s Rie Kaneto to take the top seed in 1:06.03, just .04 faster than Breeja Larson in 1:06.07. Katie Meili kept it close as well in 1:06.19.

Jeanette Ottesen swam well ahead of the field to post a 57.68 to lead the women’s 100 butterfly. Ottesen sprinted into the lead again with a 24.67 to top the 50 freestyle. In that event, Natalia Lovtcova was second this morning in 24.70. Daryna Zevina was the only swimmer under 27 with her 26.97 in this morning’s 50 backstroke.

Current series leader Katinka Hosszu claimed a top seed in the 200 IM with a 2:11.25. Hannah Miley was second in 2:12.13. Hosszu also secured first with a 2:04.35 in prelims of the 200 backstroke. The Olympic silver medalist was followed closely by Zevina in 2:04.54.

Adam Barrett (47.72) and Vladimir Morozov (47.86) both cleared 48 in prelims of the men’s 100 freestyle. Barrett took a second top seed, posting a 23.02 in the 50 butterfly, just faster than Chad Le Clos (23.06) and Oleg Kostin (23.09). Morozov came back to post the fastest 100 IM in 53.81, just ahead of Michael Andrew in 53.99.

Kirill Prigoda edged Cameron Van Der Burgh 26.61 to 26.67 for the top spot in the 50 breaststroke. In the 200 breaststroke, Mikhall Dorinov stopped the clock in 2:06.66 to secure the first seed.

Kliment Kolesnikov out touched Bobby Hurley 52.25 to 52.37 for the first seed in the 100 backstroke.

Nikolay Skvortsov posted a 1:57.00 to lead the 200 butterfly. James Guy (3:51.41) and Ernest Maksumov (3:52.13) swam the two fastest prelims times in the 400 freestyle.
