In the first weekend of action this weekend in the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Louisville Cardinals opened up with a sweep of the Missouri Tigers at home. Meanwhile, a tri-meet in Christansburg, Va., was called off early due to weather, and the “Backyard Brawl” featured a pair of old Big East rivals.

Missouri at Louisville

Competing for the first time since her trip to the Short Course World Championships, Louisville sophomore Mallory Comerford won the 50 free (23.25), 100 free (49.60) and 200 free (1:48.72) and finished second in the 100 fly (54.97) over the two-day meet. She also led her team to wins in both the 200 and 400 free relay and 200 and 400 medley relays.

Senior teammate Andrea Cottrell won the 200 breast (2:11.84) and touched out Missouri’s Katherine Ross to win the 100 breast, 1:00.87 to 1:00.88. Cottrell again edged Ross to win the 200 IM in 2:03.01, but Ross did have the edge in the 100 IM, 56.38 to 56.54.

Louisville’s Alina Kendzior swept the backstroke events, while teammate Abbie Houck won the 200 fly and 500 free. Other Louisville winners included Rachael Bradford-Feldman (400 IM) and Grace Oglesby (100 fly), while Kira Zubar won the 1000 free for Mizzou. Diving wins went to Missouri’s Lauren Reedy (one-meter) and Louisville’s Molly Fears (three-meter).

With all four relays and all but three individual event victories, the Cardinal women crushed the Tigers, 249-123.

On the men’s side, Louisville pulled out a 224-147 triumph. The Cardinal men also won all four relays, but the top individual performance came from Missouri senior Michael Chadwick, who won the 100 free (43.64), 100 IM (49.64) and 50 free (20.04) and finished third in the 200 free (1:37.55).

Louisville’s Carlos Claverie was productive against the Tigers with a dominant win in the 200 breast (1:57.35) before edging defending NCAA champion Fabien Schwingenschlogl to win the 100 breast, 54.23 to 54.51. He wrapped up the meet with a 200 IM victory with a time of 1:48.97.

Louisville’s Grigory Tarasevich won the 200 back (1:44.36) on Friday and then the 100 back (48.00) Saturday. His teammate Marcelo Acosta won both the 500 (4:25.44) and 1000 free (9:09.37), and teammates Jarrett Jones (400 IM), Josh Quallen (100 fly), Trevor Carroll (200 free) and Zach Harting (200 fly) also picked up first place finishes.

Georgia Tech and Kentucky at Virginia Tech

Originally intended to be a two-day dual meet, winter weather conditions and the ensuing poor road conditions resulted in the cancellation of Saturday morning’s competition between the Yellow Jackets, Wildcats and Hokies. So the results from day one were final, with Kentucky sweeping both ACC rivals and Virginia Tech sweeping Georgia Tech.

On the women’s side, Kentucky edged VT 72-59 and crushed GT 99-32. VT beat Georgia Tech 95-36. The Kentucky men beat Virginia Tech 75-56, while the Wildcats beat the Yellow Jacket men 93-38. The score of the Virginia Tech vs. Georgia Tech men’s meet was almost identical, 92-39.

Kentucky won all but three individual events in the women’s meet. The 200 back featured a 1-2-3 sweep led by defending NCAA champion Danielle Galyer, her freshman sister Ali Galyer and U.S. national champion Bridgette Alexander. But the Hokies did get wins from Jessica Hespeler (1650 free, 16:48.20), Klaudia Nazieblo (1:58.14) and the women’s 400 free relay (3:23.82). For Georgia Tech, Iris Wang won the 100 free in 50.46.

The Hokie men got win out of Robert Owen in the 200 back (1:44.82) and Brandon Fiala in the 200 breast (2:00.04). In diving, Virginia Tech’s Benjamin Schiesl won one-meter diving with a score of 343.05. For Georgia Tech, Rodrigo Castro won the 100 free (44.94). Full results from the meet can be found here.

The Panthers swept the Mountaineers, their rival from the old Big East, in this edition of the Backyard Brawl. With a sweep of all four relays, the Pitt women won 205.5-94.5, and the Pitt men won by an even larger margin, 214-86.

Pitt’s Amanda Richey pulled off a quick turnaround to win the 1000 free (10:03.48) and 200 free (1:52.83) and then later returning to the pool to win the 500 free (4:57.52). Teammate Emily Murphy completed the Pitt freestyle sweep with wins in the 50 (23.72) and 100 free (51.78).

Pitt’s Valerie Daigneault swept the backstrokes and teammate Kinga Cichowska the breaststroke events. Morgan Bullock won both the 100 fly and 200 IM, and Meme Sharp swept the one and three-meter diving events.

For the Pitt men, Eben Vorster took home a trio of wins in the 200 fly (1:49.78), 100 fly (50.22) and 200 IM (1:51.94).
